NBC Struggling To Create A Hit Lineup

While CBS, ABC and Fox have launched successful shows, NBC hasn't had a hit in two years. The network, in turn, is launching 14 new series, more than any other network, as it tries to create a successful slate of programming.

With Sunday Night Football and The Voice, and for the past two years top ratings in the coveted audience of 18-to-49 demo, the network would seem to be in prime position as the new TV season gets under way this week.

But while CBS, ABC and Fox have launched successful shows, NBC hasn’t had a hit in two years.

The network, in turn, is launching 14 new series, more than any other network, as it struggles to create a successful slate of programming. Only one new series from last season, the crime drama The Mysteries of Laura, made it to a sophomore year, and its average audience age is 60, limiting the show’s appeal to most advertisers.

Other series for which NBC had high hopes, such as Aquarius and an updated version of the comedy Coach, struggled or didn’t get off the ground.

NBC’s first new effort of the season—a variety show hosted by Neil Patrick Harris called Best Time Ever —didn’t get off to a spectacular start critically or in the ratings last week.

That NBC has claimed the P18-49 Crown for the past 2 years without a hit series is amazing in and of itself. As for Best Time Ever, that is an hour of my life I will never get back. NBC does have a hit on it’s hands though. The Carmichael Show is one of the 3 best Comedies on TV, along with Big Bang and Modern Family.
