Nexstar Taps McNamara To Lead Roanoke Duo

Broadcast veteran and former KHON Honolulu GM Joseph McNamara will lead the Fox-CW pair of WFXR-WWCW and associated digital operations.

Nexstar Broadcasting Group today appointed Joseph McNamara vice president and general manager of WFXR-WWCW (Fox-CW) Roanoke-Lynchburg, Va. (DMA 67). His appointment is effective immediately and he will report to Tim Busch, Co-COO of Nexstar Broadcasting.

McNamara has over three decades of broadcasting and management experience. Prior to joining Nexstar, from 2006 to 2013, he was the president-GM of KHON Honolulu, where under his leadership, the station increased viewership and revenue growth which drove record operating results.

Before joining KHON, McNamara spent 24 years in various capacities at WBNG Binghamton, N.Y. Between 1982 and 1994 he ascended from his initial role as an account executive to positions of increased responsibility serving as the national sales manager, local sales manager and general sales manager.

He was promoted to president-GM of WBNG in 1994 and served in that capacity for 12 years. Parallel to his duties at WBNG, McNamara also had corporate responsibilities at Gateway Communications including sales development, news research, and served as a regional group head with oversight for WBNG and WTAJ Johnstown-Altoona, Pa.

McNamara began his broadcasting career in 1980 as an account executive for WTNH Hartford-New Haven, Conn., and prior to that at WMGC Binghamton.

McNamara is a graduate of the State University of New York (SUNY) where he received his Bachelor of Arts in business administration with an emphasis on marketing, sales, and personnel management.
