Scripps Developing Live 4 P.M. Show For Fall

The news-oriented program will have nationally focused content and some local content. It will air on ABC affiliate KNXV Phoenix and NBC affiliate KSHB Kansas City, Mo. and six other Scripps stations.

Station group E. W. Scripps is developing an original daytime program for fall 2014 to air on eight of its stations.

Scripps, which already airs original game show Let’s Ask America and pop culture news show The List on several of its stations, is developing a live, news-oriented program that will have nationally focused content and some local content. It will air on ABC affiliate KNXV Phoenix and NBC affiliate KSHB Kansas City, Mo. and six other Scripps stations.

“It’s a 4 p.m. show,” says Bob Sullivan, VP of programming at E. W. Scripps. “We want to be live from 4 p.m. Eastern to 5 p.m. Pacific because the eight markets span four time zones.

“We want to be live over that window of time because the way people watch news and share news is very different from the way local stations have done news since its inception.”

Scripps is testing four or five formats and has already begun hiring a production team. On-air talent will be hired within a few months.

Meantime, Scripps is also developing programs for its 3 p.m. time slots, but for fall 2015. That may include a Star Jones legal show that Scripps had been shopping to stations with syndicator Debmar-Mercury.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

“There’s still interest in the Star Jones project, but we have a few projects in development,” says Sullivan.

The live 4pm shows, rolling across time zones, is cool. It’s 4 o’clock somewhere! Good luck.
