Sinclair Named TVN’s Station Group Of Year

The award from TVNewsCheck recognizes the company’s deep faith in broadcasting and its status as a technology leader through its championing a new broadcast standard and new uses for TV spectrum.

TVNewsCheck today named the Sinclair Broadcast Group the recipient of its inaugural Station Group of the Year Award for 2014.

To be presented early next year, the honor recognizes Sinclair’s commitment to and outstanding leadership of the industry.

“Over the past year, no group has had a greater impact on the business than Sinclair,” said TVNewsCheck Editor Harry A. Jessell.

“Its unprecedented roll-up of TV stations demonstrates a deep faith in broadcasting, and it has become a technology leader by championing a new broadcast standard and new uses for TV spectrum. It has also proposed creating a national cable news network by aggregating the local news resources of TV stations,” Jessell added.

Sinclair CEO David Smith is “one of the industry’s true entrepreneurs,” Jessell said. “His long-term vision is evident in every move that Sinclair makes.”

As part of its tribute to Sinclair, TVNewsCheck will publish an in-depth profile of the company and its expanding influence in U.S. broadcasting in the January issue of its Executive Outlook magazine, to be published in January.

Maybe “Broadcaster of the Year” to TV Newsweek, but I think more “Broadcaster to be Jeered” by the many people now – or soon to be – unemployed in the markets where they operate their shadow corporations.

At least some people will have their jobs at the station, unlike everyone that will lose their jobs at the stations looking to give up the frequenices in the buy back. And what other Companies have made a major stand to purchase stations and keep them (not sell their frequencies back) this year. Heck, even Disney did not purchase WJLA et al and is rumored to have looked at selling their O&Os. At least Sinclair is putting money on the line to keep Broadcasting. Again, who other has made that big of a bet this year – putting their money where their mouth is?

That happens when any number of big names rolls into town, not just Sinclair. I recall someone using “death star” as a name for another company that does similar things. At least they propped up Dielectric, which is bound to be helpful to everyone.

Congratulations to Sinclair…that company is redefining local television, which is a very good thing! Question…how did Perry Sook take the news? I thought he invented local television…much like Al Gore invented the internet.
