Sinclair Names New GMs In D.C., Columbus

Dan Mellon takes over at WJLA Washington and co-owned NewsChannel8, while Tony D'Angelo will lead WSYX Columbus, Ohio.

Sinclair Broadcast Group has chosen Dan Mellon to be the general manager of ABC affiliate WJLA Washington (DMA 8) and its co-owned local cable news network, NewsChannel 8. He succeeds Bill Lord who is leaving the station at the end of September following its purchase by Sinclair from Allbritton Communications.

At the same time, Sinclair also announced that Tony D’Angelo has been promoted to GM of ABC affil WSYX Columbus, Ohio (DMA 32). D’Angelo will also be responsible for the oversight of WTTE (Fox), which is programmed by Sinclair under a local marketing agreement, and will oversee sales and other non-programming related services of WWHO (CW) pursuant to a joint sales and shared services agreement. 

Mellon has been group manager of Sinclair’s stations since 2006. From 2005 to 2006, he was GM of Sinclair’s WSYX Columbus, Ohio, and was responsible for the oversight of WTTE, which is programmed by Sinclair under a local marketing agreement.  He also oversaw the sales and other non-programming related services of WWHO (CW), pursuant to a joint sales and shared services agreement.

Prior to that, he was GM of KOVR Sacramento, Calif., a station Sinclair owned from 2001 to 2005. From 1998 to 2001, he was GM of WUCW Minneapolis. From 1994 to 1998, Mellon was director of sales and as national sales manager for various CBS television station groups. Prior to that and since 1985, Mellon worked for several companies where he served as sales manager and account executive. He holds a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Pace University in New York.

D’Angelo has been director of sales at WSYX (ABC), WTTE (FOX) and WWHO (CW) in Columbus, Ohio, since 2003.  Prior to that and from 1996, he served in various sales management positions with Sinclair stations in Columbus, Ohio, including general sales manager at WTTE from 1996 through 2003.

From 1993 to 1996, he was the national and local sales manager at WFSB Hartford, Conn. Prior to that, he held various management positions at various companies.
