SNTA: Syndies Still Strong In Summer

Syndicated TV accounted for 35 shows out of the 50 highest-rated programs in June among adults 18-49, compared to 12 network TV shows and only three cable TV shows, according to a report by the Syndicated Network Television Association.

Syndicated television has more top-rated shows than network TV and cable TV so far this summer in key demographic groups, notably adults 18-49. That’s according to an analysis of June 2013 Nielsen ratings by the Syndicated Network Television Association.

Syndicated TV accounted for 35 shows out of the 50 highest-rated programs in June among adults 18-49, compared to 12 network TV shows and only three cable TV shows.

Meantime, 147 syndicated TV shows generated a higher 18-49 rating than the average cable TV original program, SNTA said.

Other research results:

  • Among adults 18-34, 15 syndicated TV shows including Warner Bros.’ The Big Bang Theory, Twentieth Television’s Family Guy, Debmar-Mercury’s Family Feud, CBS Television Distribution’s Jeopardy and NBCUniversal’s Maury had a higher rating than the average rating for network TV primetime shows.
  • In the 18-34 demographic, syndicated TV’s top-rated show is The Big Bang Theory (2.8 rating). As a point of comparison, on average, cable TV shows generated a 0.1 rating in that demo.

Unlike network TV, syndicated television tends to hold up throughout the summer, SNTA said, with about 90% of the regular season audience continuing to watch syndicated TV by the end of August, based on Nielsen data from 2012.
