Tegna Replacing ‘T.D. Jakes’ With ‘BOLD’

The freshman syndicated talk show has been canceled by Tegna “due to the current economics of daytime TV,” and will be replaced by a renamed BOLD, a half-hour that will feature several live feeds a day to affiliates in all four U.S. time zones.

After one season on the air, Tegna Media’s syndicated T.D. Jakes talk show is being replaced with BOLD, a live, multi-platform show that Tegna says will feature viewer reaction and opinion.

BOLD (Broadcast Online Live Daily), produced by Tegna and MGM, will be renamed prior to this fall’s launch. It’s being billed by Tegna as “the industry’s first live, multi-daypart syndicated show, spotlighting the day’s essential stories, information and trending social media content in real-time across multiple screens.” It was introduced at the NATPE conference in January.

The show will originate from a studio being built by Tegna in Denver, where the company owns KUSA. It will feature several live feeds a day to stations in all four U.S. time zones. Stations are being offered the half-hour show on a cash-and-barter basis and they will have the option to buy two of them and run them consecutively.

On BOLD, the emphasis will be on hot topics trending on social media. The show will air live whenever a station airs it. That means the “show” really has to be ongoing for about 12 or more hours a day. This will be accomplished by arranging the show’s staff in two shifts a day starting in early morning, said Bob Sullivan, Tegna’s SVP of programming, who added that staffing will be the show’s largest area of expense.

Daytime TV has become predictable and similar. BOLD will be different,” said Dave Lougee, Tegna president. “The show will reflect how viewers are consuming content across multiple platforms at the same time. BOLD combines those experiences in an informative, interactive and innovative way. BOLD will do the heavy lifting, bringing together the day’s top stories, funny and emotional content and viral videos in one place.”

In a statement, Tegna said it “is proud of the T.D. Jakes show. It has been an honor to work with T. D. Jakes and his organizations as well as our partner 44 Blue Productions.  They’ve been outstanding champions in making the Jakes program a reality. Together, we produced a show that was compelling, real and the closest thing to Oprah since she left the air. Despite the quality of the show and talent, we will not pursue a second season due to the current economics of daytime TV.”

TD Jakes the closest thing to Oprah? Did the TEGNA publicity guy get dizzy trying to spin this, because that show could barely top “Dr.” Keith Ablow’s bomb of a talk show thanks to their terrible promotion and timeslots! Also not a real good idea to backhand your departing talent when you’re promoting something that will ‘change the industry’ (and the only thing this is doing is copying “RightThisMinute”, but 12 times a day).
