Telemundo Closes On Purchase Of WWSI

The addition of the full-power station in Philadelphia gives NBCU's Hispanic group 16 stations.

Telemundo Station Group today announced that it has completed the acquisition of its Philadelphia affiliate, WWSI, from ZGS Communications. With this purchase, Telemundo Station Group now owns 16 full-power stations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

In September, WWSI will move to share facilities and resources with WCAU, the NBC-owned station in the market. Further, it plans to launch a local Spanish-language newscast in January 2014.

Additionally, Telemundo Station Group is in the process of acquiring a new antenna that will increase WWSI’s coverage effective Dec. 1.

In addition, the station group will launch Telemundophiladelphia.com, a new branded, localized, full-service website serving the Hispanic community.

“The acquisition of our affiliate WWSI further demonstrates our commitment to the local communities we serve,” said Manuel Abud, president, Telemundo Station Group. “We look forward to continue strengthening ties with our viewers in the Philadelphia DMA and providing them with a richer and engaging experience.”
