TiVo Offers DVR To Viewers Without Cable
TiVo, a pioneer of digital-video recorders, is offering a DVR for people who don’t pay for cable or satellite TV services in a move designed to win over former Aereo customers. The TiVo Roamio OTA DVR can record content from broadcast networks including ABC, CBS and NBC, as well as stream Internet video from Netflix and YouTube, according to a statement today. The device costs $49.99 with service fees of $14.99 per month and a one-year commitment, and will be available at Best Buy stores starting Sept. 14.

This story has gotten huge play ……….. For @nabtweets and the #cashcasters, TiVo is handing you an incredible opportunity to use your digital subchannels to load all kinds of cool content on these TiVo boxes …………… I’m getting one as soon as they come out, and I know I’d pay a small monthly fee to the D.C. broadcasters for any number of recorded replay services, such as a 15 min. recap of the 11 a.m. sports reports from the previous week or highlights from the past week’s local news. An on-demand weekend weather forecast would be really neat, too ………… Or how about serving low-income OTA homes with a steady diet of academic lessons produced by Khan Academy or a year’s worth of re-reruns of “It’s Academic” ……….. Maybe Comcast/NBCU could load videos explaining how to use a Windows laptop in homes that qualify for Internet Essentials …………… This TiVo box offering, coupled with the gold mine awaiting TV stations under the Rockefeller-Thune Local Choice proposal, should have every TV station executive in the country thinking that this is a rare moment in local TV history that must not be passed up………….. Hey Ted, if it is such a great idea, why aren’t the Cable Systems willing to put the digital subchannels on in HD? Just because they are SD OTA, there is no reason they could not be feed via fiber to the Head End in HD. And speaking of which, why are your cable systems not doing what you suggest on VOD? But then you throw in the Rockefeller-Thune proposal. Oh, I get it….you were being sarcastic and just your typical self………….. Please follow me on Twitter @NotTedatACA
