DMA 8: SAN FRANCISCO

Tom Cibrowski Named GM Of ABC’s KGO

He moves from SVP of ABC news programs, news gathering and special events to take over the top spot at the San Francisco O&O.

Veteran ABC News executive Tom Cibrowski has been appointed the new president and general manager of ABC O&O KGO San Francisco (DMA 8).

In his new role, Cibrowski has overall management responsibility for KGO and all of its ancillary businesses. He succeeds William Burton, who was promoted to SVP of ABC Daytime in January and had been KGO GM since 2011.

“Tom’s incredible talent at creating and producing top-quality compelling news content that drives increased viewer engagement makes him the best choice to drive KGO’s future modernization and growth,” said Wendy McMahon, president, ABC Owned Television Stations Group. “He is a strong leader with a keen business acumen that will serve our team and audiences well.”
Cibrowski previously was senior vice president of ABC news programs, news gathering and special events, since in August 2014.

Prior to that role, he was senior executive producer of Good Morning America. He joined the program as senior broadcast producer in 2002 and was later promoted to executive producer in 2006.

Under his leadership, the newscast won the Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Morning Program three times and was nominated six times. The week of April 9, 2012, Good Morning America became the No. 1 morning newscast for the first time in 16 years, snapping NBC’s historic 852-week winning streak.

Cibrowski is a seasoned international producer. He was with Diane Sawyer in Iraq immediately before the war started and returned with Robin Roberts six months after combat began. In 2003, he traveled to Bahrain and Kuwait with Charles Gibson to produce a series about the generals leading the war effort.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

He began his career at ABC News as a desk assistant in 1990 in the Washington bureau. He has covered a wide range of major domestic and international news events as an ABC News producer, including the Bosnian war and Oklahoma City bombing, the downfall of dictators in Indonesia and Haiti, and the Clinton administration’s cruise missile attacks on Iraq.

Cibrowski won an Emmy for reporting on the first World Trade Center bombing in 1993.

He attended Boston University and graduated with a degree in journalism.

Why in the world would you hire a person who knows not a thing about top line revenue in this day in age???..Unless all the sales are managed out of NY..which may be the case…

Well that’s easy, all you have to do is look at who the President Of ABC Owned TV Stations Group is, someone who specialized in on-platform video metrics as well as social reach and engagement. ABC is littered with unserious people who hire other unserious people.

A good GSM will have no problem taking care of the revenue side of the business. The sales staff’s in Top ten markets have a lot of talent….no problem.

Actually he may never talk to the GSM as he/she will be talking to VP/Sales for ABC and in most cases the GSM at these O&O stations are more than qualified to handle top line revenue. GM in these markets will live and die with the news ratings of the station….
