Tornado Forces WEEK Peoria Off The Air

The Peoria, Ill., NBC affiliate's meteorologists were live when they were forced to take cover as a tornado touched down in East Peoria on Sunday.

WEEK Peoria, Ill. (DMA 117), was forced to go off the air Sunday when a tornado ripped through property near the station on the east side of town.

The Granite-owned ABC affiliate posted a video of meteorologists Sandy Gallant and Chuck Collins warning viewers in the area to take cover. High winds are audible in the video as Gallant says, “We need to go off air now,” before the signal goes black. Watch the video here.

The tornado scraped along the edge of the station’s property, says Greg Smith, a morning producer at the station told TVNewsCheck in a phone call this morning.

“We had some slight roof damage and some power hits yesterday, and we had to go off air, but we were back up within a few minutes,” he says. “We were pretty lucky.”

Near the station are several houses that sustained damage and a convenience store that had its roof ripped off, Smith says.
