Tribune Stockholders Approve Sinclair Merger

At a special meeting held today, the stockholders of Tribune Media Co. voted overwhelmingly to approve the previously announced acquisition of the company by Sinclair Broadcast Group. “Today’s vote is an important milestone in the merger process and confirms that Tribune stockholders strongly support this transaction and the value it delivers,” said Peter Kern, Tribune Media’s CEO. “We look forward to continuing our work with Sinclair toward the closing of this deal.”

Of course they did. They don’t see the repercussions from it. They just see dollar signs.

What repercussions? You mean giving a conservative voice to a Dominate Left Media that has had unbridled voice for the past 20 years.

Bullshit. You people have Fox News, Newsmax and damn near every blowhard talkshow host in the country. Sinclair’s ultra-right-wing conservative bias is infused within every newscast. Only conservatives believe (erroneously) that other outlets are liberal because they simply can’t handle the truth that is reported. If you did, you’d know Trump is a treasonous small-handed moron who needs to be removed.

With this transaction Sinclair would have the “potential” to reach 50% of American TV households. That means every Sinclair owned market and every TV set would have to be tuned into the local market Sinclair station. As opposed to a National Network like NBC that has access to 100% of the TV households. Huge difference.
If you don’t like it, change the channel.

Cable has their channels that report to their masses. Fox to the Right. MSNBC to the Left. The problem is NBC, ABC and CBS network news is now left leaning. It’s not really leaning. The network late night shows are left leaning. It’s the way our country has wanted it fed and the way networks are feeding them. Face it, the left is winning because people don’t want to do what’s right. They want to do what feels good and hope others handle the repercussions of their bad decisions. It’s where we are in our society.
What is funny is you Lefts are all up in arms because you might have a conservative voice that preaches discipline and responsibility and for so long you haven’t had to hear that. You guys are like children when their candy is taken away. We understand that. I just hope for you and our country we can change the direction because right now we are making too many left turns.

Repercussions? If Sinclair was supposedly tight with the Obama administration then this would all be okay? The “horse left the barn” when the FCC allowed this “land grab” some 14 years ago and it is being played out by Sinclair and Nexstar. Since Sinclair is not left leaning then this is a terrible deal? If local television news is dead then what is the worry and also they still have ABC,NBC and CBS affiliates that are pounding the left’s agenda each morning and evening. Sinclair and Nexstar are both just doing what is allowed and only the big have a chance of surviving with the current broadcast business plans. IMO

Since when is ANY left or right leaning journalism appropriate? We’ve completely lost our core values and sensibilities for what journalism used to represent… SHOULD represent. Shame on all of us for even having the need for this dialogue. It sickens me.

That’s a great point. Local news is about the only stable news operating force left. If you get it on a national scale it is poison.

@martelxo92…so you say SmokeSignals has a great point, but you also agree with it being OK to give a conservative voice? Which is it? What also sickens me is that people immediately inject politics about a simple paragraph about Tribune’s shareholders approving the deal, which was obviously going to happen. The article does not mention politics at all. This deal, like it or not, will have a major impact on this industry in so many other ways aside from what content Sinclair has in their news. Yet the first thing people immediately go to? Politics….Sinclair is right wing…mainstream media blah blah blah.

News should be unbiased. That is a solid point. It once was. It’s not anymore so now the best you can hope for is balance. I would rather have left leaning voices right leaning voices and right leaning voices than all one sided. At least then there is chance for balance. When it’s all left like it is now then that takes the country on the wrong path. Sorry I didn’t detail that in my original post but didn’t think it had to be detailed.

Look at all these angry people. It doesn’t matter. Local TV in this TV station format is dying. It would have been a bigger deal 20 years ago. If you don’t like what Sinclair has to say, don’t watch their broadcast channels. It’s not like you don’t have choices.

You can knock the Sinclair takeover all you want. If the stockholders approve it, the FCC will most likely approve it, and mostly likely will change the rules to allow it. And even if the FCC didn’t change the rules, the stockholders like Sinclair. They didn’t like anybody else, not Fox, not Nexstar, not anybody else. The stockholders hold the cards.. they can choose to sell off each Tribune station separately to Sinclair… one by one, which they have every right to do. All of the arguing, all of the political posturing, all of the rhetoric… it’s all BS. It’s what the stockholders want, not what you all want, not what the opponents want. In my estimation…. it’s a done deal as of right now.

Exactly. It’s what the owners of the company want. To those mistaken dupes that really think there is any journalism on TV or radio: get real. Never been that way in my lifetime. Even Chet and David’s bias showed through.

as if Mom and Pop shareholders had any say in the Vote. The majority (corporate) shareholders have over 50% of the vote to begin with.
