TVNewsCheck will turn a spotlight on this trend with a webinar, “Live Linear Streaming and the Explosion of Innovation in TV News.” Set for March 24 at 1 p.m. ET, the webinar will focus on how media companies are crafting new approaches to storytelling, production and consumer relationships as they create and monetize streaming news services.

“World-class innovators are riding a tidal wave of live linear streaming to connected TVs and transforming news storytelling and the relationship with consumers across channels and apps,” said Brian Ring, senior director of product marketing for news at Amagi, which is sponsoring the webinar and co-producing it with TVNewsCheck.

Speakers

Shareef Abul-Ela is VP and head of LiveNow from Fox, a national streaming news service powered by Fox Television Stations (FTS). Abul-Ela oversees all aspects of LiveNOW’s strategy and operations including content, product, marketing and distribution. The raw, live and unfiltered news service currently has more than 110 hours of live news coverage per week with limited commentary and no opinion programming. It operates from studios in Phoenix and Orlando

Prior to assuming this role, Abul-Ela was the assistant news director for KTVU and KICU, the Fox duopoly in San Francisco. Prior to that, he spent over three years as the assistant news director of WVEC-TV (ABC13) in Norfolk, VA. Previously, Abul-Ela was the director of content and coverage for WPXI-TV (NBC11) in Pittsburgh, PA. Before that, he was managing editor of KTNV-TV (ABC13) in Las Vegas, NV.

Micah Grimes is VP of news and sports, Atmosphere TV, where he oversees the company’s newly formed news division, including its recently launched Atmosphere News and Atmosphere Sports channels, as well as forthcoming channels covering entertainment, weather and business.

Atmosphere News is an audio-optional news channel, developed to keep businesses and their customers informed of the latest news from around the world.

Grimes previously served as head of Social Media for NBC News and MSNBC, where he oversaw global breaking, 24-hour coverage across more than 70 social accounts. Prior to NBC News, Grimes worked at ABC News as a social media editorial lead, served as an assignment editor at ABC affiliate WFTS-TV, as well as a web and social media editor at Spectrum’s Bay News 9 cable channel.

As general manager of AccuWeather Network and OTT streaming services, Sarah Katt oversees all aspects of the network’s operations, business development, marketing and revenue.  Katt has also led the rapid development of AccuWeather’s OTT streaming services.Katt began her career at AccuWeather in 2016 as VP product development and operations for the fledgling AccuWeather Network which debuted in 2015.

In 2018, only three years after its launch, she was instrumental in securing two major awards for the AccuWeather Network, including a Telly Award in the category of “Best General News or Feature: General Television,” and a Cynopsis Award for “Best Short Form Content.” Under her leadership, AccuWeather Network has increased cable distribution by 400 percent and launched a highly successful OTT property. During her tenure, she oversaw the process for an extensive redesign of the AccuWeather production facility and video workflow and content strategy.

Prior to joining AccuWeather, Katt worked with Verizon Communications, overseeing its multiplatform video distribution strategy, and played a critical role in the successful launch of Fios1 Networks, managing the project as it grew and developed. In addition, she served in several multi-platform video leadership roles with CBS News.

Matt Dominguez is senior manager, streaming distribution and partnerships at Cox Media Group, where he manages and grows partnerships with free ad-supported streaming distributors such as Tubi, Local Now and XUMO for ten Cox Media Group local news stations. He oversees distribution deals, executes streaming strategy, and supports content and programming efforts to drive revenue and audience growth. Prior to joining Cox Media Group, Matt supported digital video and OTT for cable networks, including Food Network and Fuse TV.

Moderating the webinar will be Brian Ring, senior director, product marketing for news, Amagi. He co-leads the company’s effort to super-serve its fastest-growing vertical. Mr. Ring has a twenty-year track record of driving growth in the video and TV technology market through cross-functional product strategy, content marketing and market development programs.

Previously, Brian has served in consulting and full-time roles for companies including Ericsson (now MediaKind,) Cisco (now Synamedia,) Verizon Media, Minerva Networks, ATEME, Pac-12 Networks, Univision, Brightcove, Haivision, Singular.live, Tedial and many others.

Brian also maintains a long-standing media research practice tracking changing TV viewing behaviors using consumer surveys.
