Una Vez Mas Paying $5.2 Million For KFTY

The buyer of the San Francisco station is the largest affiliate group of Spanish-language Azteca America. The seller is High Plains Broadcasting, whose stations in San Francisco and five other markets are operated by Newport Television in duopolies.

High Plains Broadcasting, the duopoly partner of Newport Television in six markets, has agreed to sell KFTY San Francisco to Spanish-language station group Una Vez Mas, it was announced Thursday. The price was $5.2 million, according to an FCC filing seeking approval of the deal.

KFTY is licensed to Santa Rosa on the northern fringe of the San Francisco market (DMA 6).

High Plains Broadcasting owns five other stations. All six are operated under contract by Newport Television (formerly Clear Channel Television), owner of stations in 19 markets.

Founded in 2002 and headquartered in Dallas, Una Vez Mas is the largest affiliate group of Azteca America, a Mexico-based network that reaches nearly 90% of Hispanic homes in the U.S.

Una Vez Mas’ lineup includes stations in Houston; Dallas; Albuquerque, N.M.; Austin, Texas; Corpus Christi, Texas; Las Vegas; Phoenix, Ariz.; San Antonio, Texas; Santa Barbara, Calif.: Tampa, Fla.; Atlanta;  Washington; and Tucson, Ariz.

Like the others, KFTY will become an Azteca America affiliate.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

“My roots are in the Bay Area and my father owned one of the first Spanish-language television stations there,” said Terry Crosby, chairman and CEO of Una Vez Mas in a prepared statment. “This is like a homecoming for me.

“San Francisco is now the ninth-largest Spanish-language television market with more than 390,000 Hispanic households and an ideal place for UVM to expand its footprint.”

Una Vez Mas’ network, Azteca America, now reaches 89% of the Hispanic households in the U.S., through affiliates in 62 markets.

Station broker Kalil & Co. represented High Plains in the transaction.

So what does this mean for MeTV? Will it move to a sub-channel? Or be dropped all together?

I suspect the city of license is “Santa Rosa” not Santa Rose.
