Viewers Skip Syndies For Shopping

The status quo pretty much ruled the pre-holiday week ending Dec. 18 with established genre leaders generally holding on despite lower PUT levels.

Ratings for syndicated shows were in a holding pattern in the pre-holiday week ending Dec. 18, as many viewers went shopping and PUT levels declined slightly from the previous session.

Dr. Phil (CTD) continued to be the No. 1 talk show; Judge Judy (CTD) dominated the courts; Entertainment Tonight (CTD) topped the magazine rack; Wheel of Fortune (CTD) held on to the game show lead; and Big Bang Theory (WBDTD) was again first among off-net sitcoms.

Talk Shows

Dr. Phil was No. 1 for the 11th time in 14 weeks this season, holding steady with the prior frame at a 3.0 and improving 7% over last year at this time.

Live with Kelly (Disney-ABC) was up 4% to a 2.8, although still down 3% from last year. In terms of viewers, Kelly drew 96,000 fewer per show than did Regis & Kelly a year ago.

Dr. Oz (Sony) dropped 7% to a 2.6 and landed in a tie for third place with Ellen, which gained 4% to a 2.6 but fell 4% from last year. However, Oz was up 8% from a year earlier.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Maury (NBCU) was flat at a 2.3, although up 10% from last year.

Among newcomers, Anderson (WBDTD) led the rookies in first run, while dipping 7% to a 1.3. Jeremy Kyle (Debmar-Mercury) and We the People with Gloria Allred (Entertainment Studios) were unchanged at 0.6 and 0.5, respectively; and Excuse, the new latenight dating show, held firm at a 0.7.

Court Shows

Judge Judy remained the highest-rated show in daytime with an unchanged 7.0 and ruled the court shows for the 796th straight week.

Judge Joe Brown (CTD) slipped 4% to a 2.7; People’s Court (WBDTD) was flat at a 2.0; Judge Alex (Twentieth) fell 6% to a 1.7; Judge Mathis (WBDTD) remained at a 1.6; while Divorce Court (Twentieth) tumbled 12% to a 1.5.

Magazine Shows

ET was the magazine leader for the 804th consecutive week with a steady 3.7. Inside Edition (CTD) inched up 3% to a 3.1; Access Hollywood (NBCU) had the largest increase of any mag, growing 5% to a 2.0; TMZ (WBDTD) was the only magazine to decline, skidding 5% to a 1.9; while The Insider (CTD) and Extra (WBDTD) held firm at a 1.6.

Game Shows

Among game shows, Wheel lost 5% to a 7.1; Jeopardy (CTD) faded 8% to a a 5.8; Family Feud (Debmar-Mercury) upticked 3% to a 3.2; and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (Disney-ABC) saw its fortunes decline 8% to a 2.4.

Off-Net Sitcoms

In off-net syndication, newcomer Big Bang Theory continued to top veteran Two and a Half Men (WBDTD) — and every other sitcom — with a 5% rise to a new season high 6.7. Men lost 2% to a 6.2; Family Guy (Twentieth) advanced 7% to a new season high 4.5; How I Met Your Mother (Twentieth) was unchanged at a 3.5; while Seinfeld (Sony) declined 4% to a 2.7.

Among the new sitcoms, following Big Bang, 30 Rock (NBCU), a late fringe vehicle, scored a steady 1.4; and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (Twentieth) and Till Death (Sony) were flat at 1.2 and 0.7, respectively.

Off-Net Weekly Hours

Criminal Minds (CTD) topped the off-net weekly hours, although it was down 3% from the week before to a 2.9. Monk (NBCU) climbed 12% to a new season high 2.8, tying Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (NBCU), which was up 4% to a new season high 2.8, and Law & Order (NBCU), which fell 10% to a 2.8. Without a Trace (WBDTD) was unchanged at a 2.5.
