WEEKLY SYNDICATION RATINGS ROUNDUP

Weekly Gainers Few And Far Between

Only seven first-run syndicated shows reported weekly ratings gains in the frame ending July 23: Judge Judy, Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, Celebrity Name Game, Entertainment Tonight, TMZ and Dish Nation.

In-depth of coverage of the O.J. Simpson parole hearing drove the top entertainment magazines to a second-straight week of strong performances in the session ending July 23.

Entertainment Tonight led the group for the 51st consecutive frame, climbing 4% for both the week and the year to a 4-week high 2.7 live-plus-same-day national Nielsen rating.

TMZ grew 8% week to week and year to year to a 1.4, its best number since late June, while Extra clocked the biggest annual increase in the magazine world even though it was preempted 18 times for breaking news and baseball, improving 10% from last year and tying Access Hollywood for the third straight week at a 1.1.

In daytime, talk show champ Dr. Phil remained untouchable, trouncing the genre for the 46th week in a row with a steady 2.7, and jumping 17% from last year despite being in repeats on all five days.

Second-place Live with Kelly and Ryan climbed 11% in the key women 25-54 demo, and posted a rock-solid 2.0 household rating for a fifth straight week, which was well above everything else in talk.

Compared to last year, two shows in addition to Phil were up. Conflict talker Jerry Springer advanced 30% and true crime series Crime Watch Daily captured a 13% increase.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Elsewhere of note, reruns of Judge Judy, which have been the sole No. 1 shows in syndication for the past six weeks, hit a 6.5 and were joined at the top of the overall chart by Family Feud. Judy improved 2% for the week and rose 3% from last year, while Feud was up 3% for the week, but down 7% from last year.

The week’s top-rated daytime talk shows in the women 25-54 demo were:

  • Dr. Phil (1.1, unchanged from the week before)
  • Live with Kelly and Ryan (1.0, +11%)
  • Wendy Williams (0.9, unchanged)
  • Maury (0.8, -11%)
  • Ellen DeGeneres (0.7 -13), tied with Jerry Springer (0.7, -13) and Steve Wilkos (0.7, -13%)
