WFMY Greensboro Debuting HD ‘News 2.0’

The new approach to its 11 p.m. newscast follows the Gannett CBS affiliate’s upgrade to HD.

Gannett Co.’s CBS affiliate WFMY Greensboro-High Point-Winston Salem, N.C. (DMA 46), is launching News 2.0 at 11 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13.

According to the station, “a unique news coverage approach has been paired with a full renovation of WFMY’s information center, control room and studios.” High-definition technology is part of the upgrade and all local newscasts will broadcast in HD. In addition, A&A Plants has been contracted to construct the News 2 Weather Garden, an outdoor weathercasting tool.

News 2.0 is the combination of new technology, a fresh presentation, and most importantly, relevant local news content,” according to WFMY President-GM Larry Audas. “Over and over, Triad viewers have confirmed the findings of our full-year research project on what they want in local news. Folks are weary of repetitive sameness and predictable news by formula, so to speak. News 2.0 content, focus and presentation aim to report what viewers say really matters,” said Audas.

WFMY studios will feature interactive areas and tools allowing “versatile information presentation built around viewer preference,” the station said.

“We are excited to dig deeper, report more and serve all of the Triad with journalism that is timely, interactive and local,” said News Director Bob Clinkingbeard.

“Folks are weary of repetitive sameness…by formula”. Amen. Crime, mayhem, car crashes, and weather hype define about 80% of local newscasts. Then there is the commercial glut – often over 12 minutes in a half-hour newscast. The audience is rejecting this garbage. Kudos to WFMY.

We have taught viewers that news is the only local content we offer. It is the only place where we try and reflect our communities. But when that reflection is distorted by hype, sensationalism, ego-driven reporters, etc., it’s understandable why viewers fail to engage. For most viewers that reflection is not accurate. They don’t live in a world that is accurately depicted by our newscasts. Viewers want information that is relevant to their lives and that is useful…whether that relates to political issues, cooking, healthcare, finances, etc. Stop manufacturing hard news that is not relevant to most viewers and give them information that they can use. It’s time to redefine news and recognize that just because we can create a sensationalized headline about another small-time criminal…doesn’t mean that viewers see any benefit to that story.
