Wheeler: Auction ‘Delivered’ On Its Promise

The FCC chairman, who will be gone by tomorrow, praised the incentive spectrum auction, but cautioned that "there is still a long road ahead," meaning the necessary repack. "This will be an extremely important task for my successor and the new commission," he said.

On what may be his last day in office, FCC Tom Wheeler declared that the FCC incentive auction has “delivered on its ambitious promise,” repurposing 70 MHz of TV spectrum for wireless communications.

The pronouncement came after it became clear that the wireless carriers, in their forward auction bidding, would generate enough money ($18.3 billion so far) to cover the payments due broadcasters who agreed to sell their spectrum in the earlier reverse auction ($10.5 billion) and to reimburse the FCC for its administrative costs (reportedly more than $200 million) and to reimburse hundreds of broadcasters who will have to move to new channels in the post-auction repack of the TV band ($1.75 billion).

The forward auction also met the MHz/POP reserve price of $1.25.

The incentive auction is not final, Wheeler said. Bidding by the carriers will continue until there is no excess demand in any market and following the close of the forward auction, the commission will conduct an assignment phase where winning wireless bidders may bid for specific blocks

Wheeler cautioned that “there is still a long road ahead,” meaning the necessary repack. “This will be an extremely important task for my successor and the new commission,” he said.

Wheeler also noted that the FCC has also set aside 14 MHz of TV band for unlicensed use.

BRAND CONNECTIONS

Wheeler has said that he will step down as chairman upon the inauguration of Donald Trump tomorrow. Wheeler was appointed chairman by President Obama. Trump is expected to designate fellow Republican Commissioner Ajit Pai to succeed Wheeler on an interim and possibly permanent basis.

Wheeler delivered on the promise to his wireless buddies to deliver spectrum at rock-bottom prices after Big Wireless cried wolf about a bogus “spectrum scarcity.”

Rock bottom? How about free. The auction sets aside 14 MHz of free spectrum for unlicensed use. Obama/Wheeler just gave their Micro-goog cronies a parting gift they didn’t have to pay a penny for.

Hey TV? Where’s that $85 billion you were promised? Oh, only $10 billion? Feeling bamboozled yet?

Given that Wheeler is part of what will be known as one of the most corrupt political regimes in American history, his only regret, I’m sure, will be that he didn’t get to completely deliver enough spectrum to the wireless companies to force out all of the small stations that do not parrot the Socialist/Communist agenda like the 3 big networks and PBS stations do. I’m not including Fox in this only because they haven’t been caught (or admitted to) lying to their viewers. Good riddance Mr. Wheeler. Oh and a note to the new successor, it is time to re-institute the old method of a communications engineer assigned to each Commissioner. This way the “Pie in the Sky” dreams of the deluded Congressmen will be shot down before they make it to the Broadcaster. My 2 cents worth…

Fitting posting name. See the article entitled: “Fox News, Trump Is Biggest Political Romance”… you’re the perfect embodiment of such. By the way, while I’m no fan of Obammy myself, doubt any administration could beat Reagan and Nixon’s for corruption (well, the incoming certainly has a chance.)

GE, I think you have over-valued your input.
