Autria Godfrey, a popular anchor at local ABC affiliate WJLA, was arrested last month and charged with public intoxication and trespassing, according to Arlington County court records, after allegedly getting into a fight in a bar and being asked to leave.

Godfrey, 33, who anchors the station’s “Good Morning Washington” show and “ABC7 News at Noon,” was charged with the two misdemeanor counts in the early-morning hours of Feb. 18 at the Clarendon Grill in Arlington, per the arrest records. A police spokeswoman said she was arrested when she returned to the bar against police warnings.

Godfrey did not respond to requests for comment relayed to her attorney of record and the station. A woman answering the phone for her attorney, David Benowitz, said he had no comment. And Shamia Holloway, the WJLA’s community relations director, said the station wouldn’t comment on either “personnel or personal issues.”

A manager at the Clarendon Grill also declined to comment.

It’s not entirely clear what happened at the neighborhood bar that night, but according to one person with knowledge of the incident, Godfrey had been asked to leave, and did, but later returned. Police arrived to try to get her to leave again, when the TV host “began jawing” at them, the person said.

A statement from Arlington police said officers responded to a call at the 1100 block N. Highland Street, where the Clarendon Grill is located. A woman had “allegedly started an altercation inside the establishment,” according to police spokeswoman Ashley Savage. “Restaurant employees escorted the female subject off the property where she was advised by police that she would be arrested for trespassing if she returned that evening.”

According to Savage, the woman left with friends but returned later. “At approximately 1:24 AM, officers were advised that the female subject had returned to the property,” she said. “Responding officers arrived on scene and observed the female subject inside the restaurant. Autria Godfrey, 33, was arrested and charged with trespassing and drunk in public.”

Godfrey was off the air for several days last week but has since returned.

Godfrey was married to WJLA senior political reporter Scott Thuman. The couple divorced — before she replaced him on the morning show in 2013.
