WJLP Gets Reprieve, Returns To Air

The new station in Middletown, N.J., that went off the air earlier this week over a PSIP channel dispute, returns following FCC approval of a temporary stay pending an Appeals Court ruling next month.

Wednesday afternoon, PMCM TV, owner of WJLP Middleton, N.J. (New York) went back on the air. The MeTV affiliate had gone dark on Tuesday following an order from the FCC over a channel dispute with WFSB Hartford, Conn.

According to Bob McAllan, CEO of PMCM, yesterday the FCC granted PMCM’s request for a temporary stay “granting us the ability to go back on the air, which we did at roughly 3 p.m.”

The stay remains in effect until Dec. 1, McAllan said, giving the commission the opportunity to answer PMCM’s filing disputing the FCC order at the U.S. Court of Appeals on Nov. 18. PMCM’s reply is due the following day.

I doubt that this is a real problem. WFSB and WCBS share channel 33, which interferes with reception of both stations in the exact locations where PSIP confusion of channel 3 with WJLP is most likely.

KYW and WJLP don’t share a channel though.

I didn’t account for WCBS when I mentioned my solution yesterday. My bad, Trip.

WJLP is PSIP 3.10, Digital 3 ~ WFSB is PSIP 3, Digital 33 ~ WCBS is PSIP 2, Digital 33. This is a mess that the FCC created, and they will have to solve it. I believe that the solution should be for the FCC to assign a new Digital channel to WFSB, and assign the PSIP to the same channel as well.
