WMAR Relaunches 6 P.M. News As ‘In Focus’
Scripps-owned ABC affiliate WMAR Baltimore (DMA 27) today announced it is changing its 6 p.m. newscast into a new program, ABC2 In Focus, premiering tonight. This new broadcast will feature in-depth and original reporting.
“We’ve noticed a thirst in the market for in-depth stories,” said WMAR News Director Kelly Groft. “We’ll always cover the news of the day, it’s just now, at 6 p.m., we’ll slow down a bit, dig deeper, and ask more questions.”
This daily program will also the digital landscape with additional original and “breakout” or side-story content online, as well as comprehensive support on both social media and mobile platforms.
WMAR says In Focus, promoted as “The Next Level in Local News,” intends “to ask the hard questions, provide relentless follow-ups, and target the issues too often ignored in the Baltimore area and beyond.”
“The marketing potential for this new show is enormous,” said Alex Shaw, the station’s director of creative services. “We are very excited to get the word out about something so unique to not just the Baltimore area, but local television news in general.”
In Focus has been part of WMAR’s strategic plans for quite some time, and no staffer has been left out of the process. “In Focus has been a stationwide effort since the beginning, and support has been tremendous,” said Bill Hooper, WMAR VP-GM. “This show will not only fill a much needed void for investigative journalism in the area, but will also serve as yet another way WMAR stands apart from the other stations in the market.”

Desperate stations do desperate things….As a Baltimore Sun article on the News Ratings stated “Maybe this goes without saying, but when it comes to Baltimore news viewing, this market is still a tale of two tiers: The top one with WJZ and WBAL, and the lower one with WBFF and WMAR.” I remember one formergm who once stated “we cannot go any lower”, ROFLMAO.
