WNJU Starts One World Trade Center Broadcasts

With the push of a button, Telemundo-owned WNJU New York (DMA 1) became the first Tri-State television station to officially resume over-the-air transmissions from One World Trade Center. The station announced this morning, during a special ceremony in Lower Manhattan, that its signal will be powered by the most powerful, solid-state broadcast transmitter ever constructed. 

“This is a significant achievement,” said Cristina Schwarz, WNJU president-GM. “Telemundo 47’s over-the-air broadcast signal has become the very first to resume transmission from One World Trade Center. We are particularly proud that Telemundo 47 — a Spanish-language television station — was the first television station in the market to do so. This pioneering moment became possible through the leadership of the best engineering and technology team in television, as well as through a great partnership with The Durst Organization.”

WNJU said that while only 12 linear feet in size, its over-the-air transmitter “is powered by 66 kilowatts of technology. This power will provide Telemundo 47 with the largest coverage area of any television station in the New York market. Later this year, the transmitter will also power the over-the-air signal from sister station [WNBC], which is preparing to relocate its transmission facilities to One World Trade Center.”

WNJU will officially cease over-the-air transmissions from the Empire State Building on June 30. 

Working with Durst, WNJU has also installed a new camera on the One World Trade Center spire, providing viewers with a clear shot of the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and other key landmarks in Lower Manhattan.
