WPIX Names Mark Effron News Director

The television and radio news veteran joins Tribune’s New York CW affiliate on April 17.

Tribune Broadcasting’s CW affiliate WPIX New York (DMA 1) today named Mark Effron vice president and news director. He will assume his new duties on April 17. Effron replaces Bill Carey who was ND from November 2009 to October 2012.

Effron comes to WPIX with more than 30 years of television news management experience, most notably at MSNBC and Post-Newsweek. Most recently, he was general manager/executive producer of The Takeaway, a joint daily production partnership between WNYC-AM-FM New York and Public Radio International.

At MSNBC, Effron was VP of news and daytime programming; while at the helm he reorganized MSNBC daytime and led the expansion of weekend programming for the network.

Prior to his post at MSNBC, Effron was the VP of news at Post-Newsweek, the broadcasting division of The Washington Post Inc. While at Post-Newsweek Effron also served as news director and station manager of WFSB Hartford, Conn. Effron also held a series of station management roles at WTOP-AM  Washington, and WDIV-TV Detroit, where he helped oversee all news content.

Prior to his role at The Takeaway, Effron was president-COO of TitanTV Media, a digital content network that he helped establish.

Effron holds a master’s degree in Journalism from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in political science from Brandeis University.
