WPMT Debuts Spanish Edition Of 6:30 News

Tribune’s Harrisburg, Pa., Fox affiliate will run a Spanish-language of its 6:30 p.m. newscast at 10 p.m. over the air on a subchannel and on its local 24/7 cable news channel.

Tribune Broadcasting’s Fox affiliate in Harrisburg-Lancaster-Lebanon-York, Pa. (DMA 39), WPMT, will debut a Spanish-language edition of Fox43 News — Fox43 News En Espanol.

Beginning Monday, May 2, each weekday edition of Fox43 News at 6:30 will be translated into Spanish and broadcast at 10 p.m. on Fox43 News 24/7, the region’s all-local 24-hour news channel.

“With such a sizable and vital population of Pennsylvanians for whom Spanish is their first language, we know it is an important community to serve,” said WPMT News Director Chris Holden. “With a Spanish-language newscast, we’re providing a great option for Spanish-speaking residents.”

Fox43 News 24/7 appears on Comcast and Blue Ridge Cable on chs. 244 and 126, respectively. 24/7 is also available over the air on digital ch. 43.3. The channel launched in 2009 to provide an “always on” option for local news viewers. Fox43 News 24/7 runs daily installments of Fox43 Morning News, Fox43 News at 6:30 and Fox43 News at 10. The half hour of Fox43 News En Espanol will be the area’s first Spanish-language local newscast, according to WPMT.

this is a travesty to the American public!!! If you want to help educate the spanish speaking audience… create a English tutoring show.

You still have to give them credit for creativity and use of resources. Especially from a public relations point, they’re getting national trade press. Of course, the percentage of internet access of recent immigrants in the region is likely pretty low. There will be quite a few Spanish speakers huddled around the iPad2 watching every night. I’m not sure they’re going to be giving Univision a run for the money with this, but good job trying. If they make money with it, that will be the really big headline.
