WRAL Adding Afternoon Newscast On WRAZ

Beginning Jan. 12, the Capitol Broadcasting CBS affil, WRAL, will produce a 4 p.m. newscast on its sister Fox affiliate.

Capitol Broadcasting’s CBS affiliate WRAL Raleigh, N.C. (DMA 25), is producing WRAL News at 4 p.m. on co-owned Fox affiliate WRAZ beginning Jan. 12.

The new broadcast will be anchored by veteran news team Gerald Owens, Jackie Hyland and meteorologist Mike Maze.

Owens, Hyland and Maze currently anchor WRAL News at 5:30 p.m. and WRAL News at 10 on WRAZ.

“We’re proud to provide expanded afternoon news coverage to a new audience, while expanding our news brand to Capitol Broadcasting station Fox 50,” says Steven D. Hammel, VP-GM of the two stations.

WRAL also produces news weekday mornings 7-9 on WRAZ. With this expansion, WRAL will be producing nine-and-a-half hours of live news every weekday.

WRAL News Director Rick Gall says: “The 4 p.m. newscast gives us an opportunity to get started earlier and be on the air when a significant amount of news is breaking. Viewers will be able to see the top local, state, and national stories all in one place. And we’ll make sure they’re up to speed on what’s trending in social media. We’ll cover a lot of ground, tapping the vast experience, talent, and depth of a terrific newsroom staff.”
