WRAL Raleigh Mobilizes Disaster Relief

Co-owned TV and radio stations of Capitol Broadcasting are participating in a TV special to be simulcast statewide on UNC-TV.

Capital Broadcasting’s CBS affiliate WRAL Raleigh, N.C. (DMA 25), along with UNC-TV, the state’s public broadcasting stations, have mobilized their full resources to help the thousands of families affected by Saturday’s tornadoes.

On Wednesday, April 20, WRAL will air Here to Help Disaster Relief, an all-day fundraising event from its Raleigh studios.  The cash donations raised stays local and will fund the efforts of the Triangle Red Cross, Samaritan’s Purse, the North Carolina Baptist Men and the Salvation Army of Wake County. Dozens of volunteers will staff phone banks from 6 a.m. through 8 p.m.

On WRAL, newcasts and live cut-in’s throughout the day will highlight Here to Help efforts throughout the affected areas. Then, at 7 p.m., WRAL will air a live, one-hour special Here to Help Disaster Relief  that will be simulcast throughout the state on WRAZ Durham (Fox), WJZY Charlotte (CW), WILM Wilmington and UNC-TV (statewide).

WRAL.com set up an online donation page that will stay live until further notice — http://www.wral.com/wral-tv/page/9465239/.

Capital Broadcasting’s radio stations are also on board: WRAL-FM will broadcast live from the WRAL-TV studios from 5:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. and offer telethon coverage throughout the day. And WCMC-FM will broadcast live from the WRAL-TV studios from 3 to 7 p.m. and offer telethon coverage throughout the day.

“Saturday, WRAL-TV provided incredible life-saving coverage as the storms ripped through the State, said VP-GM Steven D. Hammel. “Now, with the funds we will raise, we hope to provide some comfort and relief to the thousands of friends and neighbors whose lives have been devastated by the storms.”

They also provided all of the tornado footage coverage for FOX News. I guess the big media companies do need their local affiliates after all. BTW, it’s CapitOl Broadcasting…. with an “o”.

WRAL-TV in Raleigh is the best station in the country. Their news is a dominant number one because the ownership and management don’t just go through the motions. Crime, car wrecks, mayhem, and weather hype are NOT the news philosophy. They don’t air 12 minutes of commercials in every half-hour newscast (It’s around 7:30). This is what having a public license is all about and it translates to huge revenue. There is a lesson here if anyone cares to spend a day in Raleigh and learn from the masters.
