DMA 8 (WASHINGTON)

WRC Names Wendy Warren Digital Editorial Mgr.

NBC-owned WRC Washington (DMA 8) has hired Wendy Warren as editorial manager, digital.

Warren will oversee NBCWashington.com as well as the station’s social media and digital platforms.  She will work with all departments to ensure that the WRC website “continues to be dominant and relevant,” according to station GM Jackie Bradford.

Her first day will be Sept. 17.

Warren has extensive experience working in a newsroom.  In her current position as editor and VP of Philly.com (the website of both the Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News), she “developed new Web franchises  and verticals; created the social media strategy and established the site as a go-to place for breaking news. In fact, during her three years as editor, the site grew page views by 195% and unique monthly visitors by 87%,” Bradford added.

Before joining Philly.com, Warren worked as the business editor for The Morning Call in Allentown, Pa.  She went to James Madison University.

This is a demotion for Warren. The new owners of Philly Media told her two months ago that were disappointed with her leadership and results and it was time to go. The web franchises at philly.com were developed by others at that shop. Ironically, Warren used to bad mouth TV news journalism to her print peers but now, it seems, she can only find work as one. Warren won’t be missed by her colleagues at philly.com

When a 23 year old assignment editor is telling Wendy Warren what to post, Warren will lose it. Her job is powerless and pointless – tweeting for readers who don’t care. What a come down from being a big boss who can order people around to being just another peon. Welcome to the real world, Warren.
