WTVJ, Nonprofit Team On Investigative News

NBC's Miami O&O is joining the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting on local investigative newsgathering efforts. It's the sixth such arrangement entered into by NBCU-owned stations.

NBC-owned WTVJ Miami, (DMA 16) is teaming up with the Florida Center for Investigative Reporting (FCIR) to “enhance its local investigative reporting capabilities.” The new partnership between the nonprofit organization and Team 6 Investigators, the station’s new consumer and investigative unit, will include developing stories together, conducting research and investigations and sharing content.

“Since we launched the Team 6 Investigators unit last year, they have been busy enterprising stories and shining a spotlight on issues that affect South Florida,” said Manuel Martinez, WTVJ president-GM. “This new partnership with Florida Center for Investigative Reporting will complement our efforts and strengthen our ability to focus attention on more diverse investigations that are important to our viewers and the community we serve.”

“We’re thrilled about the partnership with NBC 6 South Florida as it enhances our accountability reporting mission,” said Sharon Rosenhause, FCIR president of the board. “From the start, FCIR has been about collaboration, and this relationship is truly an opportunity for us to help produce more public service journalism and to expand our reach across Florida with two of the state’s important journalism organizations — NBC 6 and its Telemundo sister station.”

The Team 6 Investigators unit launched in 2012 with a mission of getting answers to issues and concerns for South Florida residents. The team serves as a viewer advocacy voice. Members of the unit include Willard Shepard, Myriam Masihy, Diana Gonzalez and meteorologist and consumer expert Trina Robinson.

This partnership with Florida Center for Investigative Reporting is the sixth such agreement in the NBC Owned Stations division of NBCUniversal. Similar agreements exist in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Diego.

Founded in 2010, FCIR is a nonprofit, digital and bilingual news organization working to expose corruption, waste and inefficiencies of justice. The staff of journalists at Florida Center for Investigative Reporting is dedicated to producing investigative pieces that uphold high standards of fairness and accuracy. Among the numerous awards FCIR received in 2012 are the National Headliner Awards, Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, first place in the Florida Associated Press Broadcasters Contest, National Awards for Education Reporting and Green Eyeshade Awards.
