Kristen Berset has been through this before. That’s why she was able to make the tough announcement with an even voice and a smile on her face.

Berset, a sports anchor with CBS affiliate WUSA-9, <a href="http://www.wusa9.com/news/local/wusa9-s-kristen-berset-battles-breast-cancer-for-second-time/386529992" target="_blank">announced on the air Monday</a> that she will be taking a leave of absence to face a second bout with breast cancer.

“During my time here at WUSA-9, I’ve spoken openly about my previous battle of breast cancer as diagnosed in 2009 at the age of 27, underwent surgery and treatment and was declared cancer free two years ago. But it appears the celebration is short-lived,” Berset said. “Just before Thanksgiving, I was diagnosed with breast cancer again. Now the prognosis is great but it will require me to step away from the anchor desk for several weeks as I undergo surgery and treatment.”

“I’m going to miss you guys, but I’m going to be back,” she told her co-anchors on the WUSA-9 set before seeing anchor Lesli Foster tear up. “. . . I’m going to be back stronger, healthier, happier than before.”

She later elaborated on in a Facebook post, which she ended with “I am ready for this new fight. I’m ready to kick some Cancer butt once again.”

“You have been there for us and we’re going to be there for you,” anchor Bruce Johnson said on-air Monday.

“You are family and we have your back regardless of what happens,” Foster added. “We have you tonight and we have you at 11 and you have us always.”

“Your support has meant so much to me and I’m going to feel that love and those prayers over the next several weeks,” Berset said.

Well wishes have already poured in for Berset through social media.

Berset has been with WUSA-9 since 2011. Before that she was with WBFF in Baltimore. She was first diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer in 2009 and has used her public platform, <a href="http://kristenberset.net/">including her personal website</a>, as a way to spread breast cancer awareness since.

“I’m given such an incredible platform that reaches so many people, being in the public eye,” <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/reliable-source/wp/2013/11/12/amy-robachs-breast-cancer-diagnoses-proves-on-air-medical-tests-are-no-laughing-matter/?utm_term=.827c5dddfbc9" target="_blank">Berset told The Post in 2013</a>. “Not for one second did I think about not sharing my story.”

Berset married Comcast SportsNet reporter Brent Harris on Dec. 30, 2016, and is the stepmother to his two daughters. According to her Facebook post, the couple had plans to “expand” their family but appears to have put those on hold for now.

“I have an incredible support system that has only grown over the past several years,” she wrote. “I now have a husband and two beautiful step-daughters who have been nothing short of amazing. My family and friends have been there with love and support every step of the way.”
