WVEC Airing Special On Sequestration Impact

Belo Corp. ABC affiliate WVEC Norfolk, Va. (DMA 44), will air Sequestration: Finding Our Future at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 1. The show’s title is an extension of earlier WVEC investigations into the economic future of Hampton Roads, Va. In addition to the live broadcast, the one-hour special will be available via streaming video and archived at www.wvec.com.

“This is a complicated and important issue,” said Doug Wieder, WVEC executive news director. “Our award-winning military reporter Mike Gooding has been at the forefront of this story for weeks, and we see this as a natural extension of our commitment to our viewers.”

WVEC will devote extended coverage to sequestration in daily newscasts and in a special “Sequestration: Finding Our Future” section on wvec.com, leading up to the one-hour special. WVEC has also established a partnership with Popvox that will allow Hampton Roads residents to directly contact their congressional representatives in opposition or support of sequestration by visiting wvec.com.

WVEC cited national attention on Hampton Roads, and the potential sequestration impact on the region, as one of the reasons for producing the special. Next Tuesday, President Barack Obama will visit the region to speak at Newport News Shipbuilding, Virginia’s largest industrial employer, about the potential nationwide impact of sequestration.

“We want our viewers to be informed, but we also want them to be involved in the conversation and to take part in the process,” said Brad Ramsey, president-GM of WVEC and wvec.com. “While thousands of military families in our area stand to be impacted, this topic is critical to the future of our entire region.”

Sequestration: Finding Our Future will examine the history of congressional measures that led to the pending budget cuts, will outline opinions on both sides of this controversial issue, and will include a live panel of experts on sequestration. WVEC viewers will have the opportunity to submit questions for the panel throughout the week via Facebook (facebook.com/wvec13) and Twitter (@13News #hrsequester).

Sequestration: Let’s pause for just a moment and take a look at some of the foreign countries that are using austerity measures. Is it working…..Really? We just have another name for it. David Cassidy is so right on target. Billions of dollars in tax revenues will be lost if more people lose their jobs. We understand that it is “complicated,” sure, but how is this going to help improve the economic recovery? Maybe we should save billions by cut the department of labor while we’re at it. What are they doing about all this? I’ve never heard such silence on their behalf, ever. They appear to be totally out of the picture on this since 2008. This whole thing is another case of lying politicians saying they will create jobs and then change their tune once they get into office. Our congress is out of control and this nation is broken in so many areas because of it. Will the rich suffer? Eventually they will…..when the music stops.
