WYFF Raises $153,375 In Red Cross Donations

The devastating effects of the tornado in Moore, Oklahoma left people wondering what they could do to help. On Wednesday, May 22, Hearst-owned WYFF Greenville, S.C. (DMA 37), responded and offered an immediate outlet for those who wanted to help with relief efforts. WYFF partnered with the Upstate Chapter of the American Red Cross in a special appeal for donations to aid disaster relief.

The “4 Tornado Relief” Telethon raised $153,375 in cash donations during a seven-hour effort. These donations will provide immediate assistance and long-term support to victims.

“The response to the appeal to help our neighbors has touched all of us,” said John Soapes, WYFF president-GM. “Viewers from all over the Carolinas and Georgia showed such a willingness to open their hearts and give to this worthy cause.”

Anchors Michael Cogdill and Carol Goldsmith appealed to viewers for donations in live cut-ins throughout the afternoon and in the evening newscasts. From small personal donations to corporate checks, people continued to show their overwhelming support for others. Included in the total, Michelin North America gave a $100,000 corporate gift.
