For the first time since NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt’s May 2017 interview in the White House, a broadcast evening news anchor has scored a sit-down with President Donald Trump.
CBS News on Saturday announced that anchor Jeff Glor interviewed the president in Scotland, at his resort, and will interview the president again on Wednesday, when he returns to Washington from his Monday summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, Finland.
A preview of the interview will air Sunday morning on Face The Nation. The network said that more of the interview will be aired on CBS This Morning on Monday and on Glor’s show Monday night.
Glor’s follow-up interview with Trump on Wednesday will air on his show that night as well as across the network on Thursday.
The interview is a big “get” for Glor, who took over as Scott Pelley’s permanent replacement in December. The CBS program has lagged behind NBC and ABC in the evening news ratings.
Glor’s interview was not previously announced. Former CNN anchor Piers Morgan also conducted a surprise interview with President Trump on Friday that will air on his morning show on Monday. Morgan, unlike Glor, is a self-proclaimed friend of the president and conducted a relatively puffy interview with the president back in January.
The last broadcast news anchor to interview Trump was ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, who sat down with the president in Singapore.
