Janet Wu Announces Plan To Retire From WCVB Channel 5
Janet Wu, Emmy-award winning political and investigative reporter and longtime co-host of WCVB Channel 5’s On The Record (OTR), has announced her plan to retire from WCVB effective at the end of the year. Wu’s remarkable career spans fifty years as a reporter in Boston, with nearly four decades covering politics for WCVB. She was the first Asian American and first woman to serve as a Massachusetts State House television reporter, and is a trailblazer in Boston for women, and women of color, in media and broadcast journalism. In recognition of the significant contributions Wu has made throughout her career as a journalist and to the Asian American and Pacific Islander community, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu will declare Sunday, November 6th “Janet Wu Day” during the Mayor’s guest appearance on Sunday’s OTR.“For nearly five decades, I’ve had the privilege of reporting on the most significant news stories and political events in Massachusetts and hopefully I have gained the trust of viewers and respect of politicians while covering the political stories that personally impact their lives,” said Wu when making the announcement. “I’ve covered 12 gubernatorial administrations and countless other statewide and congressional races. It is simply time to move on.”“Janet is an incredibly talented and highly-regarded journalist who has made countless contributions to WCVB and to the community over the course of her legendary career and as a longtime member of NewsCenter 5,” said Kyle I. Janet will always be a part of WCVB’s legacy.”Wu joined WCVB Channel 5 in 1983 as the station’s State House reporter and investigative reporter as part of the 5 Investigates team. She later became WCVB’s political reporter and has been key to WCVB’s comprehensive, award-winning political coverage ever since. Additionally, beginning in 2009, Wu has co-hosted OTR, a weekly political interview and roundtable discussion program airing Sundays at 11AM, with NewsCenter 5 anchor Ed Harding.Wu was inducted into The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) Boston/New England Chapter’s Silver Circle in December 2020. This prestigious award honors individuals with twenty-five years or more of outstanding contributions to the television industry and to the community. Wu and WCVB’s political unit received an Emmy Award in 2015 in the Continuing Coverage – No Time Limit category recognizing the station’s political coverage during the 2014 campaign season. Also in 2015, she received the ‘Inspiration Award’ from the Asian Community Development Corporation for her consummate work as a political reporter. Wu was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Emerson College at the 2011 commencement, and in 2010, she was inducted into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame.In addition, Wu was a member of the WCVB team honored on multiple occasions with the coveted Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Political Journalism. In 1998, Wu was awarded top honors in the Associated Press Investigative/Enterprise category and the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Investigative Reporting for her report entitled “Public Property, Private Lies.” And in 1989, the NewsCenter 5 political team was honored with both a First Place National Headliner Award and an Edward R. Murrow Award for the best political coverage of any station in the nation.Before coming to Channel 5, Wu was the State House reporter for WGBH-TV. She also worked as a reporter for United Press International in Boston.Wu is a graduate of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. She speaks the Cantonese dialect of Chinese.
