After two years on “60 Minutes,” CBS News correspondent John Dickerson is shifting the focus of his political analysis and national affairs reporting to “CBS Sunday Morning” and other broadcasts. He’s also developing a series for Paramount Plus.
Dickerson’s title at CBS News has been bumped up from senior political analyst to chief political analyst and senior national correspondent, reflecting the breadth of his reporting. He’ll continue to serve as a key anchor on breaking news for major national events.
CBS News emphasized that moving Dickerson out of the deep-dive long-lead reporting tradition of “60 Minutes” will allow him to produce more for “Sunday Morning” as well as “CBS This Morning,” “CBS Evening News With Norah O’Donnell” and “Face the Nation.”
“This enables John to do more reporting on a regular basis across all of our programs and platforms, offering his distinctive political reporting and analysis, historical perspective, and prolific storytelling,” CBS News said in a prepared statement. “John is also working on a series for Paramount Plus building on his background as a best-selling author and historian.”
Dickerson first joined CBS as a political analyst and contributor in 2009. He’s known for his insightful reading of the political landscape, and for his plain-spoken eloquence as a writer and broadcaster. He continues to serve as a contributing writer for the Atlantic.

“John has regularly provided ‘Sunday Morning’ with a variety of stories, along with political analysis,” said “CBS Sunday Morning” executive producer Rand Morrison. “We value his insights, and couldn’t be more pleased that one of the hats he’ll now be wearing is that of ‘Sunday Morning’ contributor.”
CBS News would not elaborate on the specifics of the Paramount Plus series but it’s expected to draw on Dickerson’s journalistic skills.
Dickerson, who moderated “Face the Nation” from 2015 to early 2018, is subbing in once again on the Sunday morning public affairs show at present while his successor, senior foreign affairs correspondent Margaret Brennan, is on maternity leave. He served as co-anchor of “CBS This Morning” with Gayle King and O’Donnell from January 2018 — after Charlie Rose was hastily ousted amid sexual misconduct allegations — until mid-2019 when he joined “60 Minutes.”
Among the segments Dickerson contributed to the venerable newsmagazine during his tenure were a profile of “The Underground Railroad” author Colson Whitehead, a look at a controversial loophole in police misconduct prosecutions, a snapshot of the Biden v. Trump political battleground in Arizona that aired two days before Election Day and a primer on how flooding in Venice, Italy, has been fueled by climate change.
Dickerson also hosts the podcasts “Political Gabfest” and “Whistlestop.”
