ABC is doubling down on its game-show revival business, adding both Card Sharks and Press Your Luck to its roster of retro redos, where they will join Match Game, $100,000 Pyramid, (Celebrity) Family Feud and To Tell the Truth. (Judging by The Gong Show‘s absence from ABC’s press site, I’d say it got gonged.)
Pre-production on hour-long episodes is underway, with an eye on spring premiere dates, Vulture reports.
Card Sharks debuted in 1978 with Jim Perry as host, inviting contestants to guess audience survey results on a variety of topics, for a chance to flip oversized playing cards on the big board. There, they would guess if the next card would be higher or lower, or “freeze” their play if things get iffy. And I swear to God, if the new version foregoes physical playing cards for Wheel of Fortune-like video screens, we riot.
The most recent regular Card Sharks revival, hosted by Pat Bullard, aired in September 2001.
Press Your Luck first aired in 1983, with Peter Tomarken as host. Three contestants would answer trivia questions to amass “spins” on the Big Board. But if their spin landed on the dreaded Whammy versus a dollar value/prize, they risked losing all winnings. Per Vulture, the revival will add a bonus round where one player goes head-to-head with the Whammy for a chance to win a “fortune.”
Among its previous revivals, a version titled Whammy! The All-New Press Your Luck premiered in 2002.
I agree about rioting if they go digital on Card Sharks. Password really should’ve been the next game show they brought back.
I LOVE Password. And if (when) it comes back, BRING BACK BETTY WHITE!!! She was awesome on that show!
Yeah, last time CS incorporated a video wall the results didn’t turn out pretty (just try and mention “Clip Chips” to any hardcore game show fan)
Oh they tried Password. Only it came out more like Pyramid, and with worse players. If they do it, look at what Jimmy Fallon does on his show!
PLEASE make these have a RETRO feel especially “Press your Luck” It was my favorite show growing up. Please don`t be cute, Make it right and have it like the OLD “Press your Right” in the 80`s same for “Card Sharks” make it fun and don`t over SEX these shows.
No oversexing Press Your Luck? Darn, I was looking forward to a scantily-clad Whammy cheekily stealing contestants’ money!
So when will we hear about the 20th-anniversary edition of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? Would like to see that particular game show go back to its roots and get that Tron-like set that the UK version unveiled last year…
I would think these shows wouldn’t debut until summer, not spring, since I think ABC has already set the spring schedule. I think ABC might be preparing another “Fun & Games” night to follow up on its Sunday summer block.
I haven’t enjoyed any of the recent game show reboots, mainly due to the chosen hosts. I’m terrified of Alex Trebek’s eventual replacement. It will have to be someone with sufficient gravitas and dry wit not some silly lightweight.
I know, nowadays it’s just whatever sitcom star or comedian is out of work. There’s no pool of real hosts to pick from like in the 70s and 80s.
Plus hopefully they don’t try a soft reboot of the show with a new host, and don’t make it go TV-14.
While I haven’t seen Card Sharks, my sister and I would watch the Whammy! reboot constantly as children. I still love catching repeats on the Game Show Network when I’m home sick or otherwise have an abnormal amount of spare time. Looking forward to seeing it on TV again, game shows are the only thing that networks still do better than streaming services.
BOTH worthy shows to bring back!
I want to complain about it, but damn it if I didn’t enjoy watching these shows they’ve brought back! I say go for it.
I was hoping these might replace the others… “To Tell The Truth” needs to add a talented host, whereas Match Game should rid of their host entirely. Also, “Family Feud” is rarely families now, instead being “friends” &/or coworkers. Lastly, if we’re going to utilize “man on the street” questions, why not bring back “Street Smarts”? I have a feeling the host isn’t busy! (He is, however, more-watchable than Billy Eichner!)
The host of Street Smarts does the audience warm-up for Millionaire.
Thanks for the info.
New questions: Why not do that show over again (even with contemporary updates utilizing social media, etc.), or if not that, have him host any of the game shows on this year?! He’s funnier & more-talented than McHale or Harrison (even when Harrison was playing himself on a recent “Single Parents”)!!
I loved both of these shows. Sign me up for both revivals.
No one can top me! OG forever!
Sacrelige! How dare they try and replace the Lord and Saviour Peter Tomarken!
Seeing how Peter is dead…… it’s kinda a forgone conclusion.
I want them to bring back Joker’s Wild……..Joker, Joker, Joker!!!
They did. It’s on TNT (or TBS) with Snoop Dog as the host.
+75 TVLine Power User points (no cash value, no Jokers)
What a cool coincidence! Just recently I’ve been watching both of these shows on Buzzr (because it’s the next channel down from H & I, so I click during commercials.) Ditto, they could bring back Password too. I would happily do without Match Game and Truth, though.
Buzzr can be streamed live on their web site. 24/7.
I’d like to see TTTT reformat closer to the original show. The current version is too out of control with the questioning. I’d like to see What’s My Line or I’ve Got A Secret come back.
I love Press Your Luck, my kids grew up with it, the Whammy, he’s great. I loved Jim Perry as host of Card Sharks, please bring it back. I always liked Supermarket Sweep, please consider bringing it back, love that game show, bring back the Match Game, Please, very good game shows. I would really like to see “Double Dare, brought back, what fun, great missed game shows. Please bring back game show, “Concentration” this is a good educational game show, people need to use their minds more. Thank You
