Further proof that Grey’s Anatomy‘s vitals remain strong despite its age: ABC is expanding the medical drama’s Season 15 order, and not by a measly one or two episodes.
The network on Monday announced that it has ordered an additional three episodes, bringing the series’ current-season tally to 25. As a result, Season 15 will mark the second-longest season in Grey’s Anatomy history, tying Season 3’s 25-episode haul but falling shy of Season 2’s record-setting run of 27 (which was boosted by a four-episode spillover from Season 1).
For the second year running, Grey’s stands as ABC’s No. 1 series. So far this season the show is averaging a 1.7 demo rating, down a scant 11 percent vs. Season 14.
The move comes as Grey’s is set to fly past the 331 episode mark and, in doing so, surpass ER as (American) TV’s longest-running medical drama. As previously reported, the show is planning to acknowledge the record-shattering outing — slated to air in the spring — with an episode featuring nary a single medical story line.
Grey’s Anatomy resumes Season 15 on Thursday, Jan. 17.
Wasn’t season 2only 27 episodes becuase 4 episodes were held over from season 1s 13 episode order?
Yes.
Season 11 had 25 episodes as well.
Haven’t they been doing 24 episodes a season for several years now? But hey, I’ll take as many as I can get!
It’s only a ONE episode increase from the normal 24-episode seasons Grey’s Anatomy normally does. The only seasons that are less than 24 are:
Season 1 – 9 episodes (though they held several and added to S2)
Season 4 – 17 episodes (writer’s strike interrupted season)
Season 7 – 22 episodes (less because so much time spent on musical episode)
Seasons 8-14 were all 24 episodes, except S11 which was 25 as they dealt with Derek’s death.
––––––––––
So if there were three BONUS episodes it would be a 27 episode season – would make sense since they are hold Station 19 and by extending GA they could have them together to garner more interest in Station 19
Season 15 originally had 22 episodes. They cut back 2 when it was renewed which is why it says there are 3 bonus episodes totalling 25. I guess it is weird seeing as they had been doing 24 for several seasons now.
Just saw the title of episode 15.10 – Help, I’m Alive. How has tis not been a title until now?
I thought “Grey’s Anatomy” had already been set at 24 this season, as well, and had absolutely no idea that only 22 were initially ordered for S15, since we’ve all been used to “GA” having 24 episodes per season in recent years. I think the initial order of 22 episodes was probably a cost-cutting move.
Is it wrong to assume they are doing this because Station 19 is starting late and they don’t want Station 19’s season to wither without Grey’s airing on the same night?
It was my first thought.
Would’ve been nice to have more of the show when the show was actually good (quality). And season 11 technically had 25 episodes also.
It’s been pretty good the last 2 years.
I agree. I’ve always watched it, but seldom enjoyed it. The last two years since they decided to take a lighter tone, I have actually enjoyed watching for the first time!
I’m with you on that. Give us quality, not quantity. I’m happy with 8 episodes of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and A Discovery of Witches because those shows are done well. Grey’s on the other hand…
And still there are people who dare to claim this show is one of ABC’s biggest losers after the departure of Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw. There are people who yell that after every departure, but still, the ratings remain +- the same (or the decrease is minimal). Proud to be a fan.
I must admit to being one of the losers that was sure I’d be done once they left. They were my two favorite characters by a long-shot. But bringing in Teddy was a move I was not expecting, and kept me just interested to keep going. So now I have *massive* egg on my face because I still watch, despite how sad/upset I was at the loss of those two. As it has been with every loss of a character- not sure why I thought I’d be different than all the others before me.
This is great news. I’ll take all the Grey’s I can get!
This is the best season since 8, so I am very happy.
*The worst season ever. Yes, we agree.
Not 1
Not 2
But 3
…I thought the episode order was 24? (According to TVLine’s episode orders article)?

I hope this doesn’t fuel Krista Vernoff’s ego and lure her into the false illusion that’s she’s actually writing a good show.
She’s writing ABC’s #1 show, one of only six shows that averages a 3.0 in Live+7 in all television and the fourth most watched show worldwide.
