CBS is open to further expanding the Big Bang Theory universe. With Big Bang set to conclude in May, the network’s entertainment president, Kelly Kahl, hinted in a new interview that the prospect of another spinoff has been (unofficially) broached.
Although Kahl maintained to Deadline that “nothing formal” has been discussed with executive producer Chuck Lorre and Warner Bros. regarding a possible second offshoot (joining Young Sheldon), Kahl added, “The ball is squarely in their court. If they want to talk to us about it, we are here to listen.”
Meanwhile, the TBBT cast — in an appearance on Thursday’s Ellen Degeneres Show — admitted that it’s getting more emotional on set with each passing episode. “[Johnny Galecki and I] were doing a scene before the holiday… and just out of nowhere I started bawling,” Kaley Cuoco recalled. “The crew — all the camera guys and everyone came out and were like, ‘We’re so glad you cried because we’ve been waiting to cry,’ and then they all gave us this huge group hug and we all cried for like 10 minutes.”
Would you watch a second Big Bang spinoff? If so, which regular (or recurring) character(s) do you think would best be served by an offshoot? Vote via the following poll, then hit the comments to back up your choice!
The comic book shop should be spun off…
Like this idea—many semi-regulars could drop by.
Good idea, I’m in.
I would like to see that. Stuart is great and a comic book shop makes for a great workplace comedy setting.
Ya. This makes the most sense. And Stuart deserves his own show :P
Was thinking this exact same thing
This is about the only idea that I could see working.
Over a year ago I created a Stuart Spin-off.
After getting no reply from Kevin Sussman I changed it.
But I could put it back in a moments notice.
OMG, please do! Stuart would be the most obvious one to make a spinoff. I don’t think it would work with the main characters like just Leonard and Penny (not that I wouldn’t watch it also), but Stuart was a side character that had a strong comic presence in a great setting for a sit-com.
That’s a great idea ! I kinda wish I would’ve thought of it. I would definitely watch that show.
Nope. But the audience of CBS would love it.
I could see them trying to spin off Wolowitz and Bernadette. I don’t think Raj or Stuart are strong enough characters to attempt a show built around them. I would check out a Wolowitz show.
Howard, Bernie, and Raj. In a workplace comedy. Basically, what they should have done with Joey and Friends. Joey should have been about his day job on some horrible (but popular on Cable) TV show, so that he could go home to the Friends after work, off camera. We could still have entertained the notion that our favorite characters were still hanging out, even if we didn’t see it.
.
Same here. Have Raj and Howard start work at a biotech startup that also employees Bernie. Howard and Bernie can work there, while Raj uses family money to help fund the place (while his parents require him to work there to oversee their investment). Add a few zany characters here and there and you have a good show.
.
BBT is ending because Parsons wants out, and Galecki has a new gig (probably). Without Sheldon, there probably isn’t a show. Maybe you could eke out 1-2 more seasons with Penny and Leonard still on board, but not without them. So, those three are basically out. Howard and Raj are next. And no one would watch Howard if Bernadette weren’t around. So, I figure it is those three. Just Howie and Bernie would get real old, real quick.
Raj doesn’t have family money anymore.Ge stopped taking it a couple seasons ago.
The family could invest in the startup, and require their son to watch over the investment.
Great idea about Joey and the Friends!
Absolutely NOT! Maybe Bernadette, but not howard.
Time for tbbt to become a nostalgic rerun.
Bernadette and Howard are kind of a packaged deal. You couldn’t do it without both.
Young Sheldon is surprisingly good, but lightning won’t strike twice. Let it go.
You may be right. But these characters are a habit now and hardly anybody wants to do without them altogether. (Including, for me, Shelfon’s brother and mother.) For all these years it’s been a top-quality show. The people who made it that way (that is, besides the actors) ought to be able to put their talents to use in another configuration. I’m thinking the comic book shop does have potential, and maybe something can be done with Howard and Raj together. Howard and Bernadette, plus kids, doesn’t seem like a good idea unless it could have the snap of Young Sheldon. Personally I’d like to see if anything could be done with Raj and Anu because their Indian background is a new element to explore. Kind of a stretch though.
I agree.
Howard and Bernadette and Raj
With super kids.
How hilarious would it be if Bernie and Howie’s kids were very athletic and popular, but not that into science? Let the nerd parents deal with the kind of kids they wanted to be in HS.
What would be nice to see. Would be a story about Howard and Bernie, Leonard and Penny, Amy and Sheldon and Raj finally does end up Anu. All of their children grow up together and have a story about them.
Lorre needs to concentrate his efforts on a half hour Trump parody comedy. Think of the characters… It would be a cast that would change often. Guest stars would come in and portray various characters as stuff happens in real life.
He would inject it with WAY too much vitriol for it to be a success.
you just described SNL
Seeing Howard and Bernadette trying to raise a family would be great! Stuart and the comic book store would be fun as well, esp. with his new girlfriend. The Penny and Leonard premise is so tiresome anymore.
You never see the kids like they are invisible.she gets on my nerves
Thank you! Much as I love the show, I won’t be sorry to see the last of Amy or Bernadette. A schlub and a shrew are no loss.
I gotta admit for a final season it’s been pretty boring. I mean nothing is really happening.
Why not ! I’m in :)
It would be very difficult IMO.
1. It would need to be in a different location or a different time (like Young Sheldon) to explain why the other members of the regular cast aren’t there.
2. The most likely candidates for that have always been Leonard and Penny, E.g. Leonard is offered a position at Princeton which means potentially introducing other members of Leonard’s family. However Johnny Galecki has been pretty clear he’s ready to move on.
3. The other obvious option is another “Young” character, but that would require Christine Baranski in Leonard’s case or a recasting of Howard’s mother in his case and I don’t see either of those happening or any of the other characters being able to support this premise.
I think they could achieve #1 easily enough by focusing on Howard & Bernadette. Howard gets a dream job with NASA, but the job’s at one of the offices in the DC area. Could be a bit more political potentially. Howard’s never really lived anywhere but in his mama’s home, so that presents some interesting challenges for him. That’s the only configuration that could work though, IMO.
I could have seen that if they hadn’t changed Bernadette so much, when she was the rather sweet and naive character first introduced. Given that she’s become rather shrewish (as unfortunately the writers have done to all the female characters) I can’t see them moving unless it’s for her career realistically
NASA would work but I was thinking of him getting a job teaching at MIT. You can introduce younger people as students. You will still have Bernadette who gets either a job teaching also or another job. Raj could also move there because he can’t get by without Howard.
People move. I mean Fraiser moved to Seattle.
Done correctly, a spin-off with Leonard and Penny could be a new “I Love Lucy”, not that ILL could ever be replicated. But something in that vein could certainly work.
I don’t like Big Bang Theory and definitely don’t want a spinoff of it!!
Is someone forcing you to watch
Buzzinga!!!
I’d watch it, but only if Penny’s ex Zac was a featured character.
leave the show on don’t cancel it at all ,will miss the the whole show there is a lot of crap on tv now. i think it is one of the best shows on tv.
Well, certain actors want to leave, so it’s not canceled so much as it’s just ending.
I would definitely give it a try. I admit I wasn’t enamored of Young Sheldon at the beginning, but it has really grown on me. So, yes, I would watch another spin off. I’m really going to miss this show and its characters. It’s been fun to watch them all grow and adapt together.
The crew is crying because they’ll all be out of work while the multimillionaire cast can live their lives comfortably.
The crew will find other jobs. What they’re going to miss is the stability of coming to the same place with the same people for 12 years.
And the billionaire producers collect a VAST majority of the proceeds. Stop being so naive.
The horse is dead, leave it be
I agree
Agreed. Love the show – it’s one for all time. But I really don’t watch YS (yes, cathcing a glimpse of the best bits is cute), and I have no interest in seeing a show that’s doomed to be a much lesser thing.
Not necessarily. NCIS is a spin off of Jag and it’s been a huge hit.
I’m not opposed to a spinoff, but I feel like the The Powers That Be would try to take the same route as Friends and spinoff Raj, as he’s the only character not married. Like some other commenters have mentioned, I don’t think he’s a strong enough character to shoulder a new series, and said spinoff would be a disaster.
If he actually goes through with the arranged marriage, I think there’s a little bit of potential there. Could be a traditional family sitcom with non-traditional gender roles. Raj becomes a househusband while the wife’s climbing the corporate ladder at the hotel chain. That avoids the Friends’ Joey spinoff issues because they did nothing new by moving Joey to LA to pursue his career. It felt like a very special vacation episode of Friends (that would never end) and he’d eventually head home to NY rather than a show of its own.
If there’s a Raj spinoff, people will finally notice he’s the same stereotype as Apu, and come after him.
I want a show about Zack and his wife.
The could call it “The well intended”
No. I love TBBT and Young Sheldon. I like Young Sheldon because it’s a prequel. I don’t like the idea of one or more of the characters on TBBT being separated from the rest for a spin off. It would be like Friends. Joey left to go to LA (if memory serves) in his spinoff and so everyone was all separated. Watching the series finale now is a little extra sad knowing that Joey ends up across the country. I don’t want that to happen to TBBT. Just end the story and let it end. I think two prequels would be a bit much.
Leonard & Penny are the most popular characters and by far more interesting than the other options.
Really? Where’s the polling that’s determined that because they’re my least favorite characters. . . by far. I mean, it wouldn’t be the first time my opinion’s departed from the norm, but that still surprises me a lot.
I AGREE that Leonard and Penny have run their relationship to the wall.
The others are still developing.
Especially Stuart and Denise are funny and quirky with Raj having arranged partners come thru
And Howard and Bernie repartee
Sarcasm
I disagree they have run into a wall
There’s a poll attached to this article with 46% (at time of my comment) of participants saying that they would most like Penny and Leonard spun-off. That kind of makes them sound like they are the most popular… for a spin-off at least.
Did you see the poll at the bottom of the this very article?
If they do, I’d want it to be a Stuart-Denise spin-off based around the comic book shop.
Maybe if Stuart and Bert teamed up to solve crimes.
The new Lone Gunmen?
I like Stuart’s and Denise’s
Relationships dominated by Howard. And Bernie with Raj still around with new love i..nterest
While I love Sheldon, I’d just as much love a spin-off with ALL of the remaining characters. There’s a lot of bang left in Big Bang.
Agreed. :)
I think I’d watch a Howard and Bernadette with Raj spin off, but we’d need to see the kids on screen.
