Let’s get the not-so-great news out of the way first: The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful will air their last original, pre COVID-19 shutdown episodes this week — Thursday, April, 23, specifically. As we previously reported, the CBS sudsers were slightly more than a month ahead when work on both shows came to an abrupt, unprecedented halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The better news — particularly for soap nostalgia buffs — is how CBS plans to fill the 90-minute daytime void. TVLine has learned that beginning Monday, April 27, the network will dip into Y&R and B&B‘s collective 80-year library and present memorable theme weeks. Y&R will kick things off with a week of vintage episodes — some dating back as far as 1990 — centered on iconic Genoa City matriarch Katherine Chancellor (played by the late Jeanne Cooper).
Meanwhile, B&B in its first full week of reruns will feature encore episodes filmed on location in Monte Carlo (date range 2013-17), including two documentary-style episodes featuring behind the scenes footage (these Becoming Bold and Beautiful-branded installments previously aired on PopTV).
Cast members will provide bonus content with fresh commentary at the beginning and end of select episodes. (For details on when NBC’s Days of Our Lives and ABC’s General Hospital will run out of original episodes, read our exclusive report here.)
Ahead of next Monday’s themed-week launch, Y&R this Friday (April 24) will re-air an episode from 1996 that centered on Paul and Christine’s honeymoon (which was complicated by Phyllis’ presence). B&B‘s Friday episode will serve as an early kickoff to its Monte Carlo-themed week.
“It’s incredibly fun to offer fans an opportunity to look back at such memorable moments from Y&R and B&B,” said Amy Reisenbach, CBS’ EVP of Current Programs said in a statement. “Both of these shows have extraordinary legacies, and these specially curated episodes are only a small portion of what we hope to be able to present in the coming weeks.”
Details on additional theme weeks will be announced by CBS in the near future.
Looks like Soapnet is coming back.
Man I miss Soapnet. Such a convenient way to catch episodes I missed during the week. I wish it could come back and air all the soaps no longer airing. There are a ton of episodes I’d love to revisit.
I miss Soapnet as well. When the episode aired during the day and I missed it, I could catch it on there. That was before DVR’s and ON DEMAND. The only soap I watch is Days Of Our Lives, so I guess I have a while to see new episodes since they film so far in advance.
Soapnet and DVR were my lifesavers in college. I loved how they would air the entire week of the ABC soaps in blocks on Sunday late at night. So if I missed a day or two or even the entire week I could DVR it. Or DVR that same day’s episode.
Okay, I know the year 1990 is technically now considered vintage but could we at least wait until 2021 to start calling it that? No need to remind all of who were little kids back then that we’re now “vintage”. We know.
Nothing wrong with becoming “vintage” lol, plenty won’t even make it to our ages, unfortunately. I embrace it! Just got to wait on my grey hair lol
I started going grey at around 16 by 20 salt and pepper, so I’m up to white now. Haha
Not completely but more and more pops up everyday. Parts of my beard though are what I call “Santa white”.
.
Luckily I learned how to dye my hair at a young age from my grandmother who was a beautician and had a mini salon set up in her basement. In my lifetime I’ve dyed myself through the colors of the rainbow and beyond. LOL No use to at the moment though. Sadly you are right. This year I officially outlived my uncle/godfather who died at 38. So I do appreciate the days I get. Even though they are tough.
HI JB , Re. age !
This is what happened to me ;
Saved: Wed 13/05/2020 5:29 PM
Yesterday when I was young !
Yesterday was the worst day of my life , ever ! My whole world came crashing down , Here is what happened : I went the chemist for some prescriptions , of course not for me as I am very healthy . As I was about to enter the store , this young woman stepped in front of , opened the door for me and said; after you sir . Opening the door for me ! A member of the stronger sex , me , who has opened countless doors for women , me who pulled out chairs for them , me who was leading many older ladies across the road , me , who lead many of young women astra…. Hm , I digress . Anyway I stood there dumbfounded and she took my arm and lead me into the store . —- I picked up the prescription and left . I sat in my car hyperventilating and contemplated what has just happened , my tears were flowing , Oh the humiliation . When I was able to think clearly I went home . My wife opened the door and said; what happened , have you ben crying ? Then I broke down and told her everything , after she patted my head and said ; there , there . I thought that was a tad patronising but it felt good .
I understand now that I have to live with the terrible damage age and time has inflicted on me and that I was a fool , because I really thought it was YESTERDAY when I was young
1990 is as far away from 2020 as 1990 was to 1960.
But the 90s are back in style, so yay.
True. But in 1990 I didn’t consider that vintage. I was kind of enamored with the 50s and 60s. Even the 70s. In HS I won tickets from a soda machine to see Peter, Paul, and Mary and I was stoked. My friends were like, “Who?”
J.B. anything over 25 years is considered vintage or oldie
While there isn’t a set census on the whole retro vs vintage (although there is on antique) a large majority place vintage at 30 or more years but less than 100. At 100 and more pretty much everyone considers that antique. I’m not sure how “Classic” is determined as that usually applies to cars and motorcycles.
.
There’s always going to be people arguing over what makes what. I still don’t know if I’m a Millennial or Gen X. Depending on which social scientist or website I read it changes. I used to be Gen Y but then that mysteriously vanished after being touted by social scientists. I still have magazines like Time and Newsweek with cover stories about Gen Y. So I dunno. I gave up trying to figure it out. But I’m definitely team 30plusVintage LOL
I am ready for the new episodes to come back on. I am not watching reruns. How much longer, before you are able to start filming again?
I am referring to Young and Restless and Bold and Beautiful. I miss watching them so much. I love the people and their characters. Any information on a start date for new shows?
When is Young and Restless returning with new Scripts?

This is what GH should be doing instead of airing episodes that are only 1-2 years old and calling them “classics” on Fridays. They are repeats, not classics. And stretching out current episodes with flashback filler. It’s awful.
Oh I so totally agree with you about the GH “repeats”. Do the people at GH who make these decisions realize how many of us have watched since the mid 70’s and would LOVE to see Monica/Lesley/Rick Weber, Heather/Ann Logan/Jeff Weber and Laura/Scotty/Luke triangles, Rose Kelly, Joe Kelly, Aunt Ruby, Diana Taylor, etc. etc. etc.? Would love to also see Dr. Noah Drake, Frisco and Tony Jones, Blackie Parrish, Sonny and Brenda/Jax and Brenda……or how about an entire 3 weeks of celebrated GH weddings?
GH has such a rich history – I think we are all gonna be ticked off if they insist, as you said, on showing us episodes that are less than 5 years old.
There are story line series that they should show. Ice Princess, B.J.’s heart, Robin and Stone, Lucky’s “death”. Just to name a few. I could do without seeing Luke and Laura’s wedding again though. I’ve seen it hundred of times over the years, lol. Would love to see Luke, Laura & Lucky on the run though. There are probably issues with going back to far though, not sure how all that works but clearly ABC should own the rights to all that history, at least I would think.
As much as I loved Luke and Laura’s wedding, I have seen it enough, too. But I loved their honeymoon in Beecher’s Corner on the Whitaker’s farm.
I’d like to see the entire “Left Handed Boy” story line. Oh and Robin and Stone for SURE!
B&B needs to go back to the 1990s too. I’ve had enough of the Steffy/Liam/Hope Liam/Hope/Wyatt, and whatever other iteration of the Spencer/Logan/Forrester triangle for a lifetime. Go back to an era where those characters weren’t born yet and start from there.
I feel the same way. But I think TPTB realize classic b&b and the current era b&b are two completely different shows. Y&R has done a great job keeping its history (and actors) consistent throughout the past couple of decades.
I never even thought about it like that! Makes sense. I wish Classic B&B was on CBS All Access or something. I do miss those days lol
I wish Guiding Light was on All Access
Me too!! I miss Guiding Light and As The World Turns. They were better than B&B…but that’s the difference in personal Bell money versus corporate greed of P&G.
Here’s an idea. Why not create a soap website (at least until production resumes, months from now?) which charges a monthly fee and have ALL EPISODES OF ALL SEASONS of GH, etc and let the fans binge watch whatever era they want. The proceeds could go to those on the front line fighting this pandemic. And the fans would be happy. A win, win.
I like that idea do it for all soaps
Bring back episodes on Young and Restless from the Snapper, Jill, Greg and Leslie days.
Why not show episodes with Tom Selleck or other actors who went on to other gigs from the soaps.
Just what I was thinking.
Now that would be adding to the fun occasionally as well. Great idea.
70’s and 80’s too please. The world did not begin in the 90’s, even for the advertisers (though some of those old ads were hilarious … and some are reminders of why I thank God I’m not an adult female in the 70s trying to make a decent living….harder then, still hard now).
CBS could test the cast, those negative could still act.
We don’t have enough tests for doctors, but let’s test soap opera actors so you can watch some TV.
Talk about being self centered.
I personally NOT ENJOYING Back when??
I already seeing it (Telling my age) & I want to be in The PRESENT Not back in the day.
So I guessed I will watched something else.
Me too, I’ve been a loyal fan so I want to watch new storylines.
Great idea! Maybe the newbee’s ( less than 30 yrs)will see the reasons for some things! 😀
YES! The current writing of Y&R has been appalling. This is fantastic! Soap writing at its best! Personally, I wouldn’t mind if they kept airing these shows.
I totally agree. I stopped watching Y&R years ago because of that exact reason. I’m loving this though!!!
Fantastic love the chance to see those special times. Thank you
They should have aired the show in half hour installments to double there content after production shut down. They could have used the second half hour for special content specials. This woukd have kept new content flowing.
Go back to 1985-86 and rerun the Abbotts’ divorce, Jill blackmailing them into giving her 20% of Jabot and Jill’s shooting.
Sven the masseuse! That’s around when I started watching!
Me too! I was on my first job and all the ladies (and some of us guys) where I worked watched every day and eventually, so did I. 😄
I haven’t been able to see full episodes of Young and the Restless or Bold and the Beautiful for weeks now!
It’s always being interrupted or not shown at all! I thought they were ok for the beginning of May to the middle of May.
Either way it will give me a break from the soaps for awhile. They should have a soap network again!
If this is the case . put them on DVDS so we can see them from beginning .I would like to follow the story .
Putting the show on DVD’s is something I’ve been wishing for for a longtime…I would love to have it as a collectors item.
I will watch and enjoy anything my soaps put on air. Love what they’ve shown so far.
When will y and r be able to start filming again?
#Pandemic
Smart money says mid to late August.
There’s some good articles that came out today on Deadline about TV and movies and how they’re already preparing to get back to work whenever the states open back up and allow it. It’ll be different depending on where they film but for the soaps since they’re mostly indoors I’d say sometime this summer if California does open up like planned and the cases start to drop off like they’re hoping.
Sounds great!
Start Y n R from the begining
Yes start from the beginning!
Please shoe some of the important episodes from the 70’s. You have viewers who have been there since day one. They deserve it. It was the first years that made the show wildly popular. Please
I’m SO hoping for a Sheila week!
Oh Sheila was the best! To this day she is STILL my favorite soap villainess (followed closely by Abby (Donna Mills) on “Knots Landing”). Is it my imagination or were ALL of the soaps (daytime and prime time) better “back then”?
She was the reason I started watching back in 1992-93.
Why not bring back some Guiding Light and As the World Turns? How fun would it be to see some of those?!?!
This times a hundred.
Guiding Light please! I miss that show
Yes! There are plenty of major storylines from those two shows as well. enough content to alternate shows and weeks.
I’m sorry. I am just one of those people who does not like old soap reruns. I’m so glad everyone is staying safe, but I’ll come back when new episodes come back.
They should have done what GH is doing. They’re obviously trying to stretch what they have. Practically every time someone says something they show a flashback to when it happened or if someone is talking about a relationship, for example they show some flashbacks showing the relationship. I agree about the”classic” Friday’s though, a year or two ago is not classic! You’ve been on the air for 50 years for goodness sake, show some classic storylines. Better yet, show some All My Children repeats.
I love these classic episodes! I’ve been watching over 35 years. Love seeing previous characters!! Love seeing how everyone has changed. Thanks for showing them. Love em!!
Do the first episodes of y&r with the brooks and fosters family!!!!
