MTV has “severed ties” with The Challenge star Dee Nguyen over a pair of since-deleted tweets in which she made light of the Black Lives Matter movement and the death of George Floyd.
Nguyen on Saturday tweeted, “Idk why some of u think I’m anti BLM. I’ve been saying that since the day I lost my virginity.” She also commented on an Instagram post about Floyd, writing that “people die every f–king day,” according to Us Weekly.
In response to these posts, MTV on Monday took to social media with an announcement of its own: “As a result of Dee Nguyen‘s offensive comments on the Black Lives Matter movement, we have severed ties with her,” the MTV reality competition series announced via Twitter on Monday, June 8. “Out of respect for our Challengers, we’ll air our season as planned. We strongly condemn systemic racism and stand with those raising their voices against injustice.”
First introduced to TV audiences via the British reality hit Geordie Shore, Nguyen joined The Challenge franchise in 2019, competing in War of the Worlds and War of the Worlds 2.
UPDATE: Nguyen issued the following statement to Us Weekly on Wednesday, June 10:
“I want to sincerely apologize to my fellow cast members, the production crew at [Bunim-Murray] and the staff at MTV for my choice of words and actions in the most recent events. What was stated wasn’t meant to be hurtful or discriminatory in any matter. It was a knee jerk of a reaction and it’s certainly not the way that I feel nor what I meant.”
She continued, “I would love to take it back. … Racial intolerance is intolerable and unacceptable. Having had to deal with racism my entire life, ironically through all this, there is a warm feeling I have with the fact that humans are standing together to call out unacceptable comments and behaviors that in the past were rarely called on. Again, we are shown that you can be judged in a second on all social media platforms.”
Note to self: The moment I get hired for a TV gig, delete your Twitter. Who knows what stuff I wrote ten years ago.
This is stuff she wrote in the last week.. not years ago.
In this case it was something she said 3 days ago. There’s other topics this comment would be appropriate.
Racist tweets are never okay but this is not a matter of someone digging through her past tweets, looking for dirt. These are tweets from this weekend. She then doubled down on them by arguing about them with two Black castmates.
How were her comments “racist”, Laura? Geeze….you liberals see racism in everything.
Yes, Alyssa, because everyone who disagrees with you must be opposite of you in their political beliefs. How about we all stop blaming things on liberals or conservatives? People can actually agree even if they have different political beliefs and people can disagree even if they have the same political beliefs. Maybe let’s not cause further division. We have enough of that.
Bravo!
I don’t know who made black lives matter God but God created all men and women equal no matter what color you are so if anybody is being racist it’s black lives matter because I matter my children matter they are white so you saying that they’re don’t matter because they’re white bull crap
Gee, Alyssa … we probably see racism in some (not all) comments when they come from racist people like you.
Whether it was 10 years ago or 10 days ago, what she said was RACIST, insensitive, and pure ignorant!! Age has nothing to do with it. A good person at heart would never say those things. Good riddance!
Yay! Finally a non-white man has been #canceled! 🧍🏻♂️🤸🏻♂️🧍🏻♂️
It’s not anyone’s fault white men suck,
You suck.
I think we can all agree that, no, in fact you do.
🖕🏻
That’s a bigoted comment.
Now that I think about it, you’re right they do. And some of them are really, really good at that they could charge a fee.
🤗🌈😯🍆🍑💙💜💗
Yay! A moronic comment from someone privileged 🤸♀️ Actions have consequences.
Yay! Another moronic comment from a moron who never heeded the proverb about assuming…
I’m not 100% white 🤸🏻♂️
You’re not 100% there either lol. You mean that proverb that says kiss my grits? YOU brought race with your weak @ss attempt at sarcasm. Action have consequences. Didn’t anyone ever teach you that?
Wow. Now you’re using albleist language too. You’re on a roll today pardner!
.
No I meant the proverb about this 🖕🏻 finger. You can sit and spin on it for all I care.
.
And where did I ever say my comment was sarcastic? Because it’s not. Humourous sure. However I meant every character of the comment.
.
And I don’t know why you keep going on about actions having consequences. It’s not relevant to my original comment, your wrong assumption about my race, or your terrible ability to deflect from the issue at hand. Stay pressed.
Sit and spin? You mean what you do with your sister bro? I’m flattered. I’m your worst nightmare Gomer. An educated Black man. BTW, did you know that actions have consequences? Asking for a friend.
Love You!
This is how they really think. You think any of the celebrities are really sorry? There just doing damage control at this point and saying “sorry”, “I need to grow”, “I respect X group” is like saying “please don’t fire me! I will be good I promise”.
Yikes. Those tweets were very insensitive and disrespectful. You would think grown adults would know better than to tweet such remarks nowadays given the current state of the world, but nope.
I get that this girl is spiraling from losing a lot of what makes her life, her life, but her opening takeaway is, now I know what’s important, and that’s forgiveness (of me)?
Also, can someone working for TVLine that’s probably reading this start covering The Challenge weekly? I would love to see reviews since MTV sadly airs it once and never again.
If you’re into Podcasts there’s one called MTV Reality RHAP UP The Challenge. It’s part of Rob Has a Podcast franchise of podcasts…
Thank you so much!
agreed
Derrick from the show has a podcast called Challenge Mania! Check it out!
Amazing how people STILL haven’t learned to stop saying/facebooking/tweeting stupid sh1t.
You should also mention that the only reason this came to light is because Swaggy c and Bailey (from Big Brother and now The Challenge) called her out on it and she started fighting with them about BLM. It was sooo uncalled for and if what Swaggy tweeted about her texting him saying to play up hating her and block her on twitter because it will make good tv for the next season of The Challenge is true, I mean that is just CRAZYYY.
I figured they would have to let her go, although they’ve let a lot of pretty blatant racist stuff slide the past few years (Johnny Bananas, while the face of the franchise, repeatedly made jokes calling Cheyenne, who is black, Chantal; Georgia did blackface not that long ago; Camilla called Leroy the N word before she was eventually kicked off for assaulting a producer, but the N word wasn’t enough)—I think some of these MTV stars probably got comfortably and didn’t realize that the shift taking place now means they will be accountable for their garbage.
You forgot Jordan making monkey noises at Nia when he was on the Real World, he’s another one of The Challenge IT boys. …
I’m pretty sure before now the only people who have been kicked off the show were Camilla for assaulting a producer (but not her remarks) and Kenny and Evan for sexually assaulting/raping Tonya, which only happened after she sued MTV for filming it and not stepping in to help her out. So its pretty cool they finally did something but it kind of seems like its only because of what’s happening in the USA right now.
Hmm, are you sure? I watch The Challenge. I don’t remember her calling Leroy the N-word. She called him a Black motherf****r during a drunken tirade. She apologized the next morning in front of everyone and he refused to accept her apology.
You don’t remember because they obviously didn’t air it to save their own butts. Almost every challenger from Rivals III (the season it happened) confirmed such behavior then, and prior to that season.
Stop apologizing to these pathetic idiots, they have no power over you until you give it to them.
BYE B!T¢H👋🏾
The first one is just a dumb joke. Not really racist.
so you determine whats racist now?
No, but apparently one side does and I’m sick of it. Bunch of hypocrites you all are.
So…basically you cant have an opinion that doesn’t support BLM or any left wing group. If so, you will be vanished….very facist.
No, people can criticize the movement. If people were being silenced for criticizing this movement or other left-wing mindsets, Fox News wouldn’t exist anymore, and Trump wouldn’t be able to spew his nonsense on Twitter. More like this isn’t exactly the smartest way to do so.
.
A private business choosing to fire someone over their comments does not equate to fascism. The president allowing for the tear gassing of protesters and use of tanks to intimidate them, on the other hand…
Angela – cops don’t tear gas protestors… looting and rioting is NOT a protest. They are both criminal actions. Tear gas is far less than they deserve.
Aww, little snowflake, you keep crying your white girl tears of “oppression”. They’re delicious to me. :)
Fascism is what you people have been about for hundreds of years. Turnabout is fair play; get ready for this to be the new normal for a few centuries.
It’s exactly people like you that will cause everyone to wise up and get fed up at the double standard and enough will be enough. Any goodwill this entire “movement” has generated is evaporating in the eyes of a vast majority of level minded people.
Don’t let your mouth 👄 get your ass in trouble the saying goes. Everyone should live by this
Wow. Not for nothing, but she’s a top drawer hottie.
Whatever happened to “Freedom of Speech”? This used to be America! We used to be able to speak our minds no matter how distasteful it might be and regardless of who might disagree. To everyone applauding this… what you are really applauding is fascism, pure and simple.
Sweet Cordelia…you still don’t get it. Your white privilege is still disallowing you from focusing on the obvious. You and your kids lives matter because you’re white. You don’t have the same fears of this world nor do you share the same experiences that my family and I have when it comes to race. You and I have to have different conversations with our children about dealing with police and, quite simply, this world. You still can’t you understand: ALL lives CAN’T matter UNTIL, at the very least, BLACK LIVES MATTER.
Smh

Black lives matter doesn’t say white lives doesn’t matter, black lives matter means what is says black lives matter
Doesn’t say matter more than any other lives, doesn’t mean other lives don’t matter, or simply means black lives matter
you’re wasting your time. people like that don’t want to understand. ignorance is their safety blanket. the worst part is she procreated, YIKES!
Lol you guys saying “my life matters I’m white omg this isn’t fair” obviously your life matters no one is saying all lives don’t how is everyone life going to matter if black people dont ? That’s the whole movement everyone just wants to be treated fairly a black man was literally hunted down while running through a neighbor instead of them just calling the police because they fear black people that much so until you walk down the street and get discriminated or killed for your skin color don’t speak for black people.
What did she say that was racist? If you don’t support black lives matter you’re racist?
exactly^
It’s a damn shame honestly.. I liked personally liked her and how much work she put in this season as compared to her previous seasons but certain things are inexcusable. It feels like once a person earns a little money and recognition they feel like they can get away with anything. I hope it’s a lesson learnt for reality stars to strive to stand for something that brings positivity and light to this already darkened world.. I liked how Jordan tried to raise awareness and set an example for people with disabilities ,he has the biggest ego and seems impossible at times but he stands for something greater than he is and it’s admirable.
I feel as if Dee did make a mistake. I love dee and will always love dee. When I first heard of the blm movement, I was like “Man people die everyday, there’s no need for people to over exaggerate this mans death!” But after educating myself I feel as if blm is important in our world and more African Americans need to be heard. I can understand Dee’s comment, but she made a big mistake. She was frustrated and posted a comment that didn’t really explain how she felt head-on. She now apologized and that makes me happy, I’m hoping this apology was genuine rather than something he felt she needed to do to not look bad. I’m actually very distraught that she can’t be on mtv anymore because I always routed for her on the challenge these past 2 or 3 years. I hope she realizes her mistakes and watches herself from now on. Idk if the challenge will be the same without her tho 😔. But what she said was unacceptable. Luckily she learned about the topic and now she realizes how important it is.
Dee was sorry she lost her job, not sorry she said what she said. Mostly, bc there was nothing wrong with either thing she said.
Wake up people, George Floyds death was tragic and never shoulda happened? He was a career criminal POS that never learned his lesson from being in and out of prison and that brought him and the cops into this sad scenario of events. You people are all WHACKED outta your mind with your so called protests, I mean RIOT’S. You are a bunch if spoiled ASSHOLES!
Maybe I’m missing something… how is being anti-blm, racist? Black people that are anti-KKK aren’t necessarily racist. You can support black people without liking an organization like BLM, which is a known TERRORIST group that causes violence and rioting. (SEE 2016 election)
Personally I find it telling about MTV that Dee has been fired for this. Having a personal opinion about a political topic is taboo… unless of course you’re black. Then you can say and do whatever you want, (looking at you Baleigh).
Go Figure that Swaggy C and Bayleigh are at the forefront of this entire topic. Makes sense that of all the black people on the Challenge that they would be the ones whistle-blowing. They were disgusting racist P’sOS on Big Brother and no one wanted them on this show. They can take the pots and pans king (Josh) with them while they’re at it.
