Yep, you read that headline correctly.
Harrison Ford (!) and Helen Mirren (!!) will star in Yellowstone‘s upcoming 1932 prequel, TVLine has learned.
The next chapter of what Paramount+ is calling Yellowstone‘s “origin story” — which began with the wildly popular 1883 prequel spinoff — will introduce viewers to a new generation of the series’ central family, the Duttons. Through them, per an official description, the series will “explore the early 20th century when pandemics, historic drought, the end of Prohibition and the Great Depression all plague the mountain west, and the Duttons who call it home.”
The streamer first announced 1932 in February. “Taylor Sheridan has put roots down for the Dutton Family tree that stand strong and tall, with many branches that continue to engage record-breaking audiences,” 1883 executive producer David C. Glasser said via statement at the time. “It is awe-inspiring to work with Taylor, ViacomCBS and the entire team on this universe.”
No word yet on who Ford and Mirren will play in the prequel. There’s also no official word on whether 1932 will be a self-contained limited series the way that 1883 turned out to be. The series, which will be produced by MTV Entertainment Studios, 101 Studios and Bosque Ranch Productions, will launch in December.
Paramount+ previously put into development a Yellowstone spinoff named 6666, which will focus on the titular centuries-old Texas ranch known for its exemplary horses and livestock. Yellowstone set much of its Season 4 action at the 6666, where Jimmy works and where his fiancée, Emily, is a vet tech.
Ford is best known for playing Star Wars‘ Han Solo and the title role in the Indiana Jones films. He recently signed on to play a down-to-earth therapist in Apple TV+’s Shrinking. The Oscar- and Emmy-winning Mirren has a long and diverse resume that includes The Queen, the Reds films, F9 and National Treasure: Book of Secrets. Her varied TV work includes Prime Suspect and providing Becky’s inner voice on Glee.
What do you think about 1932‘s casting news? Sound off in the comments!
Wow, that is one casting news. I haven’t watched either of the two others shows, but I intend to.
I plan on watching it all now, too…hope these two play spouses. They are. both experts at their craft. 💕
Count me in too!!!
I like it!
I like it! I have watched all of Yellowstone and the first prequel.
Sure fire way to get me to watch it.
You had me at Harrison!
This is legit “HOLY SHIRT” level casting.
She’ll be 77 in July & he’ll turn 80…I hope they are playing spouses! 😍
What a stellar cast!!
Anythng with Helen Mirren deserves a chance
Talk about excellence in casting – truly impressive. TS is basically creating his own legacy of shows and so far I’ve been all in. Good for him!
I’m sorry but how are all these Prequel shows supposed to be spin-offs? None of the characters or actors from the main show are getting their own dedicated solo show to themselves that can be properly called a Spin-off. These shows are just pure Prequels. Dear TvLine, please properly fix the titles of your articles to not mislead readers. Please get the nomenclature right, thank you.
Dear Jaye, please properly fix your understanding of what a spinoff can consist of rather than spreading information and claiming that TVline is who is doing so.
It is a spinoff and a prequel.
A proper Spin-off example would be Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They took David Boreanaz’s character Angel from the main show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, headlined by Sarah Michelle Gellar, and spun him off to his own five Season show which also had other cast members and characters from Buffy moved too. THAT is the very definition of a Spin-off, this is just a Prequel, not a Spin-off at all. None of the characters from the main show are showing up at all in this in any way so how can it be classified as a Spin-off? How? It cannot. It’s a Proper Prequel and nothing else.
No. A show spun off another show is a spin off. Same right holders, producers, “characters by”, continuity. If you want to get all technical, that is what the contracts would say.
Unless they changed the wording of the article, the word ‘spinoff’ was used twice and that was with the ‘prequel’ used as a descriptor directly before it, otherwise it was labelled as a prequel throughout this news item.
I think you’re being a little too pedantic about TV vocabulary and almost certainly being ridiculous by accusing tvline of trying to mislead its readers.
Please open a dictionary AND your narrow-minded way of thinking. Most dictionaries define ’spin-off’ as “a product marketed by its association with a popular television program, movie, etc.” Nothing in the definition states its timeline has to be ‘before’ or ‘after’ (a sequel or a prequel) and nothing says that the same characters have to be used — the ONLY stipulation is that there is some association, which can be interpreted by writers and viewers alike in many various ways.
@Jaye Whattaya want, a refund?
Looking forward to seeing Ford and Mirren in 1932. Have loved watching Yellowstone and 1883. Good writing and great shows.
Wow. That is some A Level casting there. It’s becoming impossible to overstate how big of a phenomenon Yellowstone is, and for my money, it couldn’t have happened to a more deserving show. Way to keep me from cancelling my Paramount Plus subscription lol.
Wow, for sure! That’s awesome! I love Yellowstone, but hadn’t signed up for Paramount+ to watch 1883. Watched the beginning on network tv, but may have to sign up now, especially to watch Ford & Mirren in that prequel! I’m all in now!
Welp, that’s going on my watch list. That is superb casting.
Wouldn’t they be the Faith and Tim roles?
I doubt it given Tim’s character fought in the Civil War. However, Harrison could be Elsa’s brother, John Dutton, Jr.
wow, what a great cast this is going to be amazing.
Awesome,Yippy,can’t wait,all sounds good
Looking forward to this even more now! They starred together in ‘The Mosquito Coast’ over 35 years ago, a film which contains Ford’s greatest performance, IMHO.
wow. I can’t believe they got them!
Can’t wait for all of Taylor’s shows. Always a satisfying experience to watch. Sometimes a shock. Sometimes sweet. Sometimes rough. But always look forward to seeing more.
Wow wow WOW! Those Duttons do have quite the family tree!
Forget the Yellowstone prequel… can Helen Mirren somehow be added to the next Indiana Jones movie?
Wow! Now that’s quite a cast! Think I’ll have to watch.
Wonderful Dutton franchise, I hope they keep them coming. 1883 & Yellowstone are the best shows on TV. Would love to have a Dutton show all year round
