There’s a new order in the court: Kapil Talwalkar, who played court clerk Neil on NBC‘s Night Court, will not return for the upcoming Season 2, TVLine has confirmed.
A source tells TVLine that the show wanted to take things in a different direction creatively, with lots of different characters and personalities, more in the vein of the original Night Court. But the source emphasizes that the cast and producers are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to work with Talwalkar, and he will always be a part of the Night Court family.
Fans noticed that Neil didn’t appear in Night Court’s special holiday episode, which aired on Saturday. Talwalkar, a veteran of Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist and Charmed, was a series regular when Night Court debuted in January, appearing in all 16 episodes. Season 2 — without Talwalkar — premieres Tuesday, Jan. 2 at 8/7c on NBC.
Additionally, Gary Anthony Williams, who played Flobert in the holiday episode, will be recurring in Season 2.
Will you miss Neil in Season 2, Night Court fans? Hit the comments below and deliver your verdict on the news.
He is the one character they could lose
I like the new guy but I think would be funny to have many different weird clerks each week
Wow. He was one of the reasons I stopped watching during season one. His character was way too cringe. Maybe I’ll try season 2 now.
No offense to Kapil Talwakar whatsoever, but I didn’t find his Neil all that amusing. Olivia is also hard to watch. I like Flobert. He was pretty funny in the Christmas episode. I hope we see a lot more of him.
It took some changes for the original Night Court to gel. I also agree Olivia is also hard to watch. I am glad Neil is gone.
Olivia needs to be the “straight man” on the show. Her timing and delivery of jokes are off. Let Larroquette and Rauch be the ones who primarily deliver the jokes.
Still looking forward to season 2. You could tell the direction they are trying to go from the Christmas special, and I think it’s a good one.
I actually liked him in the few episodes I watched. About the only character I could tolerate besides Dan.
He got Mark Brendanawiczed.
Not sure I’m returning myself.
He was the only character I watched the show for in the first season, a lovely actor. Admittedly they did not know what to do with his character, but that goes for all others in that terrible sitcom. I think they should have made him gay, cause that would really work well with his character and the storylines. The blond lead actress is beyond annoying and super cringe, like an annoying high school drama actress on drugs.
With all due respect to the actor, who I thought was really good on Zoeys Extraordinary Playlist, I thought Saturdays Christmas episode was one of the best they have done. Makes me excited to see where the show is headed in the second season.
Couldn’t agree more. Their Christmas episode was more reminiscent of the original Night Court. I thought it was great.
I was coming to say the same thing, he was good on Zoey’s and his character here was lost.
Nothing to do with his being on or off the show, but I sadly just don’t think the show is funny. Too many bad canned laughter jokes. Just not anything I find humorous. I had high hopes
Still better than the Frasier reboot. Now that is terrible.
Original night court went through cast changes the first few seasons too, it would be great if more shows did this as opposed to keeping people on that aren’t working.
I liked Neil. I hope his replacement is better or I’ll be disappointed.
He was the only reason I continued watching the reboot. Without him, it just sucks.
I won’t miss him, he didn’t seem like a good fit for the show. Flobert could be a better fit, adds a little bit of acidic character. Also gives a little feeling of Mac from the original series.
I’m not sure I’ll even watch season 2. Try as they might, this cast just doesn’t have either the chemistry or the charm of the original. Harry’s daughter is much too silly.
Adding insult to unemployment, it’s spelled Talwalkar. :)
I really enjoyed most of season 1. That Christmas special was HORRIBLE though! I’d rather them lose Gurgs than Neil. I’m not comparing her to Roz…as there is no comparison. But Gurgs I’d a HORRIBLE character! Horrible acting, no funny, and is so cringe worthy that I can’t stand to watch her scenes
Glad he is gone, he was no Charlie Robinson
I liked Neil, so far I feel Gary Anthony Williams’ character pulls to much focus when he has lines & not in a good way. Will have to see next season.
I think they tried to create the kind of dynamic of Richard Moll’s Bull from the original and failed.
I hope they find a way to improve that sort of comedic dynamic in season 2. I really enjoy the show but frankly I mainly signed on because of John Laroquette anyway
I hope they at least mention the character and where he went off to.
I watched Kapil’s run in the last season of the Charmed reboot over the summer and he was so good in it as an ill-fated magical lounge singer and love interest for the new Charmed One that it pointed out to me the problem I had with him on Night Court — he has no chemistry with the rest of the cast. And I blame it more on how the writers made Neil kinda whiny and pathetic than anything else. He played the character they conceived, it’s just unfortunate that they made a character that didn’t work. It happens from time to time. Chris Eigeman is an awesome actor and Jason on Gilmore Girls didn’t really work, either.
Boo! Well, they lost me. He was one of the main reasons that I was enjoying this iteration. Wahmp. Wahmp. Oh, well.
I like that actor but I’m not sure what changes they could make to upgrade it. I watched the 1st season and it wasn’t really funny. Sometimes it came off like they were trying too hard. I felt American Auto was funnier. I do wish him the best because he is a good actor with a nice personality.

Adding Williams to the series will be a definite improvement. He’s always gold.
