A few weeks before its season three finale, OWN is already set to renew Queen Sugar, as Ava DuVernay’s family drama will get a fourth season in 2019.
Queen Sugar, one of cable’s top 10 scripted series of the summer, will also get a new showrunner for next season. Longtime series writer and co-executive producer Anthony Sparks will take the helm, part of DuVernay’s ongoing strategy to inject new blood in the position. (The series also famously gives directing opportunities to women.) He will take the place of executive producer Kat Candler.
“Under Ava’s creative vision and leadership, Queen Sugar continues to earn a well-deserved reputation for depicting nuanced characters, rich storylines and establishing an inclusive team that inspires and ignites much needed conversations about our society today,” OWN president Erik Logan said Wednesday in a statement. “We are very proud of this show, the incredible cast, producers and crew, and can’t wait for more of the Bordelon family in season four.”
Though she remains a force in feature films, with Disney having released her A Wrinkle in Time earlier this year, DuVernay’s TV efforts have been significant. Under a first-look pact with Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films, she also has the upcoming Netflix miniseries Central Park Five, which started shooting this week in New York.
Queen Sugar, which shoots in Louisiana, has been a critical breakout for OWN since it premiered in 2016 with stars Dawn-Lyen Gardner, Rutina Wesley and Kofi Siriboe. It is produced for OWN by Warner Horizon Scripted Television and is based on the book of the same name by Natalie Baszile
The 90-minute season three finale is set to air Aug. 22.
