Bravo is aiming to introduce a new generation of viewers to Queer as Folk. Russell T. Davies, who created the original British series upon which Showtime’s popular adaptation was based, is executive-producing a reboot of the iconic drama for Bravo, TVLine’s sister publication Variety reports.
Described as a “modern take on the original British series that centers on a group of club-going friends who find support in the gay community following a tragedy,” Bravo’s new Queer as Folk will center around new characters in a unique setting.
Stephen Dunn is in board to write the reboot, executive-producing alongside Nicola Shindler (Red Productions) and Lee Eisenberg (Quantity Entertainment) and Digital Rights Group. It will be produced by Universal Cable Productions.
Though Davies’ original Queer as Folk — whose cast included Sons of Anarchy‘s Charlie Hunnam and Game of Thrones‘ Aiden Gillan — only ran for 10 episodes (1999–2000), its stateside adaptation enjoyed a healthy five-season run on Showtime (2000–2005). That version starred Gale Harold, Hal Sparks, Randy Harrison, Peter Paige and Scott Lowell as a group of gay men living in Pittsburgh, Penn. The cast also included TV legend Sharon Gless as Harold’s character’s mother.
Are you excited to meet the new Queer as Folk gang? Drop a comment with your thoughts on this reboot below.
Yesssssssssss I will devour this like candy.
me too!
me three!
I loved the US version. Not sure if it will be as good as it was since the reboot is going to Bravo. I don’t see it being as sexual as it once was. Maybe if it was on showtime again or Netflix.
Agreed. It just won’t be as good.
Hi Andy,
She actually played Hal Sparks’ character’s mother.
Yeah come onnn
This is incorrect. Sharon Gless played Hal Sparks’ characters mother.
She was more Gales mother than his own mother was, lol.
I don’t know one QAF fan that will like this. All I’ve been hearing for years is a revival with the old cast, like where are they now type of deal. They will hate this. But having said that, I’ll definitely check it out.
Yes, we are NOT happy.
No YOU are not happy. I’m just fine. Don’t lump all QAF fans in one basket. It’s appears that many are okay with this.
NO I DONT WANT TO SEE A NEW CAST ,WHATS WRONG WITH THE OLD CANST ? THEY MADE THE SERIES WHAT IT WAS ,,YOU WILL NOT GET THE BACKING FROM THE FANS ,,,,I AM SORRY FOR YOUR SHORT VITION OF THIS SHOW IT WILL NOT LAST LONG ..
I agree, on Twitter the guy who played Mike said executives told him the show was a Liability it’s like what are they talking about it’s 2019. Need to start Bombarding Showtime or Netflix to wake up and give the fans what they want
I totally agree with you!! I love Gale and to be honest he’ll always be Brian Kenny to me!!
maybe it can be a combo of old and new
YOU MAKE SENCE… BUT I DONT THINK THIS PEOPLE ARE WILLING TO TRY ANYTHING THAT MAKES SINCE
The original, while campy, was fine why can’t we leave it as-is. Perhaps provide a new LGBTQ story for original characters (under a different title)?
Isn’t that what the article above described?
Maybe they want the name QAF since HBO’s original series “Looking” got such low viewership.
WITH OUT THE ORIGINAL CAST THIS QAF WONT LAST EATHER..
Stop touching the classics!
The classic was already touched once.
Sounds like an all new cast, but if there’s any series that would lend itself well to a mix of new characters and some of the old ones, it’s this show. I wish they could use some of the cast from the US version here, but I don’t know what the rights situation is with Showtime, etc.
Me to that’s what
I want the cast from the US version to star in it I think that’s what true die hard qaf die hard fans want well I do anyways
ME TOOOOOO
Would be nice if they didn’t whitewash it this go around.
That will depend on where its set and where its filmed. Might be a bit of a foreign concept but there aren’t non-white people everywhere.
Well I’m sure when a location like that is deliberately selected, that’s exactly what they’ll say once they’re called out on casting.
A show like this will undoubtedly be set in an urban center – there aren’t really any places in the US with decently sized queer communities (with clubs scenes, etc.) that don’t also have POC. The first US adaptation was set in Pittsburgh, and as much as I love it, it was super freaking white despite the fact that a quarter of the residents of Pittsburgh are black.
QAF was actually made in Toronto Canada. It was “written” as if everyone lived in and from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania . Please people do your homework before commenting.
Why are you telling Hannah (and others) to do “homework” when you both agree the original QAF was set in Pittsburgh? No homework required. Doesn’t matter where it was made, Hannah’s point was that it was set in a city with a 25% black population that wasn’t really represented in the series.
by all means if it’s set in Kansas City or Des Moines, let’s make sure there are no POC so the show can be 100% authentic… come on
Lolol not even Kansas City! Only half of the residents are white!
I wonder which character from either the original or the reboot could even be whitewashed, since they were already white. But I agree a diverse cast would be great.
Instead of worrying about skin color of the cast, let’s hope they get great actors to play these parts. I never liked Randy Harrison from the original. His acting was always cringe worthy. I’m guessing the only reason he was hired is because the casting director had a thing for dumb blond twinks. I hope this time around someone good plays Justin and not make you laugh when the character is trying to be in a serious moment.
To each his own. I loved Randy Harrison and thought his portrayal of Justin was spot on, considering his youth and being new to the scene. Certainly not an Emmy-worthy performance, but far from “cringe worthy.” And besides, he was always so easy on the eyes. One major plus–he was actually a gay actor playing a gay role. That should count for something.
I could see this doing well on HBO or Showtime, but it will be super PG on Bravo, which is basically the antithesis of the show itself…
It was Hal Sparks character’s mother … and NO! No! No! Queer as Folk fans want the USA cast back ….been waiting it for years a reunion and the the cast agrees th would do it!
But do you really think it would work? I’m not so sure. I would hate for them to do a revival and have the fans hate it because it’s not written the way they wanted it to be. QAF fans that I know are very, VERY passionate and it would have to be absolutely perfect or they will HATE it. That’s why I say to just let it be and leave it alone.
Yes thats what
I want the US cast not a new cast
100% agreed!!
SHOWTIME AND NETFLIX dont have any idea whats going on with the fans… and they dont care if they care they would know that QAF is moe that just a show to us the fans ..but just in case they read this (WAKE UP AND HEAR WHAT WE ARE SAYING) WE WANT ( GALE ,RANDY AND THE REST )…
Its all about casting. I hope they can find someone with Gale’s charisma.
For me gale Harold is it he made Brian what he was I honestly don’t think that they could find anyone else to play him as good and I just would love to see him play him again. I watxh it every day over and over again I love this show so much.
I also don’t think a Brian character would work right now. I’m cool with a reboot but I don’t think they should make clones of the original guys.
I love it too! To me Gale did a magnificent job playing Brian and I’m sure he will love to do it again!!
This right here. Gale Harold was *perfect* for that role. He managed to exude ridiculous amounts of charisma, enticement, dismissiveness, arrogance, and affection. That kind of casting is lightning in a bottle.
I think it’s a horrible idea not to continue where the old qaf left off.
HAS ANYONE SPOKEN TO THE USA CAST IN REGARDS TO THIS TRAVASTY? IT SUCKS…….
Would love it but with the the showtime cast not a different cast. Die hard gale Harold Randy Harrison Peter Paige Sharron bless fan
Bravo is probably not the right network for this for relevant material. But who knows, a PG-13 version might work?
I think this is a great idea! Loved the US version and I think its high time for a newer version.
.
Hope its a blended cast of men, women, and non-binary folk to really represent the diversity of “queer” in 2019.
I loved the US version, but I’m not sure Bravo is a good fit for a reboot.
The US version of QAF had Ted overdose and his friends rallied around that tragedy (leading to one of the best on-screen d*ldo sword fights you may ever see) but if this is going to be a true reboot of the British original, I suppose they’ll keep Ted dead this go around…. I’m game to give it a go, but Bravo will NOT have as much flexibility with adult language and graphic sex scenes as Showtime nor even the original did.
Bravo? No thanks.
Yes, can’t wait!!!
Am so not excited, I wanna see the original cast again.
Erm, on Bravo? Hard pass to the PG-13 of it.
I love this show so much that I don’t want them to touch it. No reboot, no reunion. Just let it stand on its own.
No! Bring back the original cast! The actors agreed to a sixth season — there will be a huge fan following but only for the previous cast!
Yes, I just watched the last interview the cast had and they all still very excited about QAF.. I’m pretty sure they all would love to play their roles again!!
No QAF fan will watch this. Any “reboot” people will watch will have ONLY the original US cast – and they are all on board with this.
Wrong. I am a huge QAF fan. I’ve watched the series countless times and have attended several QAF Cons. I will at least give this a far shot.
fair shot :-)
Mildly excited. Just as long as they still center around gay men, who seem to be getting shut out of the LGBTQ lately…
Incredible how no longer being the single most powerful and majority voice within a community can be twisted into “getting shut out.” Just wow.
