Anyone got a craving for more Pickles?
The beloved ’90s cartoon Rugrats is returning to Nickelodeon with a 26-episode reboot order, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The new episodes will feature fresh adventures from original characters Tommy Pickles, Chuckie, Phil and Lil, Susie and Angelica, along with a host of new characters. (Parent company Viacom is also producing a new live-action Rugrats film featuring CGI characters.)
“Rugrats is hands-down one of the most celebrated cartoons in TV history, and we are thrilled for a whole new audience to meet these iconic characters in brand-new adventures,” Viacom chief operating officer and Nickelodeon interim president Sarah Levy said in a statement. “What was true in 1991 when the original show premiered is still true today: Kids are fascinated with the world of babies. We can’t wait for today’s kids to meet Tommy, Chuckie and pals.”
Debuting back in 1991 alongside Doug and Ren & Stimpy as one of the original Nicktoons, Rugrats followed the day-to-day lives of an adventurous band of toddlers, led by diaper-clad Tommy Pickles. It ran until 2004, tallying up a total of 172 episodes. It also inspired a series of big-screen spinoffs: 1998’s The Rugrats Movie, 2000’s Rugrats in Paris and 2003’s Rugrats Go Wild (which also featured characters from fellow Nickelodeon cartoon The Wild Thornberries).
What about All Grown Up? Why not just revive that show?
Right? What’s the point of going backwards from that?
Because it’s basically a different show and Rugrats was a lot more successful.
Why not reboot the rugrats with the rugrats as adults.
It’s sad the voices of Chuckie and Stu have passed though. I hope they try to get the original actors.
Nancy Cartwright could probably return as Chuckie.
so did the voices of Lou pickles and Suzie’s father
A bright spot in 2018 darkness
I wonder about dill , the article did not say anything about him. I wonder if they will include him or forget about him.
I found that omission odd, too. They didn’t include Kimi, either! BUT, there will be a host of new characters… Oh, joy! *sarcasm*
I’m always extremely wary when they reboot something important from my youth. On one hand, my nostalgia is off the charts. On the other, these are bad just as often as they’re good. Fingers crossed.
Will it had dil pickles and kimi
Hopefully not lol
I hope they keep the same animation style and don’t reinvent it ala Duck Tales.
I’m not a fan of the style of artwork, but the storytelling for the new Ducktales is really decent! They’ve even managed to make reference to Darkwing Duck and Gummi Bears. They’re even doing a pretty job with Gizmo Duck. Nostalgia aside, on an episode to episode basis they’re still pretty good. Adds depth in some interesting ways.
I am on the opposite side of this fence. I don’t mind the animation, but not a fan of the voice work and stories. I kept wondering what Craig Ferguson could have done with Scrooge. Tennant isn’t awful, but I think he doesn’t have the lighter, whimsical, comedic sensibility the role should have. Launchpad is the worst. Has Mrs, Beakly always been British? I didn’t care how the boys were depicted for some reason. I liked Webby the best though. The stories seem somewhat darker, if not uninspired. Are they still doing the needless subplot of what happened to the boys’ mother? They should have left well enough alone.
The problem is that the animation doesn’t appeal to young kids anymore. That is their audience. With that said, my 3 year old does watch some of the episodes on Hulu.
Uggghh! Always hated Rugrats.
Amen….. but I don’t think I was the target audience.
Couldn’t stand Doug either
So, maybe dont watch, then?
Nope. Nope nope no.
I think Tommy, Angelica and the rest of the “Rugrats” gang would be in their late 20s and early 30s by now. Would you like to see that, even on a different network, like, say, Paramount Network?
Also, I don’t see the point in rebooting the series (and the whole franchise) if it means they have to start from zero and not have Dil and Kimi appearing in these new episodes. I won’t be watching this revival. Should have just went ahead with the live-action film.
This is great news. Now, if only Nickelodeon would re-aqurie the rights to Doug, I’d be a REALLY happy camper!
