After 25 years, the TNets are consciously uncoupling from the Screen Actors Guild.
TNT and TBS will no longer air the SAG Awards, TVLine has confirmed. (The kudoscast had aired on TNT since 1998, while sister network TBS began simulcasting the event in 2007.)
This year’s SAG Awards — the first live, in-person award show of 2022 — delivered 1.8 million total viewers across both TNT and TBS, up sharply from the pre-recorded, hour-long presentation that aired in 2021, and down just nine percent from the last pre-pandemic telecast. But going back just five years, the SAG Awards drew nearly 4 million viewers, and a decade ago the audience went higher than 5 million.
The 2022 ceremony, which aired Feb. 27, saw Netflix phenom Squid Game lead the TV pack with three big wins, including both acting categories and Outstanding Stunt Ensemble, while Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso secured victories for Jason Sudeikis (for Male Actor in a Comedy) and Comedy Ensemble. In addition, Jean Smart and Kate Winslet went home winners for HBO Max’s Hacks and HBO’s Mare of Easttown, respectively.
A new home for the SAG Awards has not yet been announced — though it’s perhaps worth noting that NBC will have a hole to fill should the Golden Globes remain untelevised in 2023.
The Wall Street Journal was the first to report the news.
They advertised it poorly. I would happily have watched it every year, but rarely heard about it until after the fact.
Me too as I only heard of it a few times since the late aughts.
And yet another post merger domino drops…
So they’re dropping the SAG Awards and most of its original programming. What’s left to even show?
NCIS reruns pretty much.
Don’t forget rasslin’.
Constant reruns of NCIS: New Orleans, Supernatural, Charmed, NBA/NHL games, & movies…over & over & over yet again. 😋
Sports. It’s pretty much going back to how it was in the 90s as they show both NBA and Ncaa basketball, MLB baseball, NHL hockey, and AEW wrestling. Wouldn’t surprise me if they make deals with other leagues too. Hope the SAG Awards find a new home too.
I would not be surprised if “scripted originals” on TNT/TBS eventually end up being a handful of HBO Max series. Titans season 1 aired on TNT a few months back and The Flight Attendant season 1 aired on TBS prior to the season 2 premiere. Provided the cable bundle still exists ten years from now, I doubt that there will be any “scripted originals” on basic cable that do not stream first on streaming service owned by the cable networks parent company.
I read that the old episodes of Lucifer were going to be showed on TNT
Yeah I also read that after I made my post, Lucifer seasons 1-3 starting today. So perhaps I will end up being wrong but I do think it makes logical sense for basic cable to air “gently used scripted originals” from their corporate owned streamers.
Most of the award shows are so boring that its not worth tuning in.
Perhaps you can provide a list of award shows that pass muster with you as not being “so boring.”
I still find award shows interesting and worthy of watching. If you prefer NCIS or Law & Order reruns instead, well, that’s your choice.
You mean “when”. The awards use to be presented to people that seemed more humble and less entitled; all while having more pizazz and fun. Plus almost everyone had seen or at least knew about the shows or actors, even if they didn’t know the people behind the scenes; that’s rarely true for the last few years. Also, there are the hero awards were you can see real life people who sacrificed for others receive awards that deserve more recognition.
The last SAG Awards was so self congratulatory it was nauseating & embarrassing. The speech given by Fran Drescher was a total turnoff talking about how important their work was & so on. She obviously thinks very highly oh herself. I don’t know…just the whole show was a turnoff. And don’t get me wrong. I love movies & TV, but actors aren’t saving lives…not usually…so let’s put their work in perspective a bit.
There are too many TV movies and shows that are streamed only and those have been the ones getting all the recognition over the last several years and I don’t see that trend changing. But let’s face it…not everyone can afford to stream Apple, Paramount+, Netflix, Disney, Hulu…I know I can’t get them all.
And if I’ve never seen any the shows up for awards, I’m certainly not wasting my time tuning into the shows that honor them.
I think that’s a pretty big part of the reason ratings are going down.
The entertainment industry and that includes music spends way to much time patting itself on the back. There are way too many award shows.
I hope NBC picks up the SAG Awards from now on. I don’t get TBS or TNT since dropping cable and had to stay in a motel to watch this year’s show.
That’s only a first step. But its a good start for other networks to drop other narcissistic awards shows.
And America can breathe easy now, they won’t have to watch Hollywood placate themselves with awards and patting themselves on their backs, regaling each other how great they are.
Will TNT/TBS even exist in three years?
