Sanditon fans will get one last trip to the seaside: Season 3 will be the British drama’s last, our sister site Deadline reports.
The series’ third and final run of episodes will premiere on Sunday, March 19, at 9/8c under the auspices of PBS‘ Masterpiece. (See some first look photos from the new season.)
“Sanditon has been an incredibly special series for Masterpiece, and we know it has found its way into the hearts of countless fans,” Masterpiece executive producer Susanne Simpson said in a statement to Deadline. “While we are sad to say goodbye to the series, we know our audience has a lot to look forward to in this new season.”
Following a fan outcry over its untimely cancellation, Sanditon was renewed for Seasons 2 and 3 in May 2021. The series is based on Jane Austen’s final, unfinished novel.
Charlotte Spencer, who played Esther in the first two seasons, will not return for the period drama’s upcoming season. (That exit news came in the wake of Spencer signing on to star in the new BBC/Paramount+ drama The Gold.) Spencer’s character finished Season 2 in a state that made her extremely happy: married and with a child. (Read a full recap of the finale.) At the time, showrunner Justin Young Decider, “I think where we leave her at the end of Season 2 she’s got everything she’s ever wanted.”
Do you have thoughts about Sanditon‘s swan song? Sound off in the comments!
My brain short circuited for a second, and read this as BRIDGERTON. [Phew!]
This show is charming enough, but I was happy with it ending after Season 1 (based on the actual source material)
But Jane Austen only wrote a couple of chapters so the ending for Season 1 was completely made up by the writers and wouldn’t have represented Jane Austens vision of how she typically ends her stories.
About 90% of it was made up.
can’t wait
As long as our heroine ends up with a husband she loves and is loved by Jane Austen would be happy and so will I.
It was announced that there would only be 3 seasons when the show was revived. IIRC both Seasons 2 & 3 were filmed back to back, but I could be wrong. At ant rate, this is fine. IMO the show has not been “Austen” after Season 1, but has been fine and has and will provide closure, even if not in true Austen style. Ending it with Season 1 would have been too abrupt for me.
Same thoughts exactly. Thought Season 2 was messy to say the least but I eventually got into it. The promo for Season 3 looks as though they have found a rhythm that will work and finish the show off in a fashion that is more Austen-like.
Yes but Justin Young did hint that there could possibly be a 4th season. But I’m sure ratings for the 2nd season didn’t compare to those of the 1st.
Now if we can only have a love interest for Charlotte that isn’t HORRIBLE to her. The only one who has actually been nice at all was Stringer.
I have felt from the time that Theo James would not return to. Implement the storyline as Sidney Parker and in fact the reality has been that Masterpiece did not show it for PBS viewers for about 6 months after being cancelled by ITV . If there is any reality Theo James was Sidney Parker and you effectively killed him off you also killed the story. I am very unhappy with how the whole thing has been handled and you completely lost me on this one. ITV and Andrew Davies hurt what was Jane Austen . Theo James had his reasons but many of us feel the same way. PBS really needs to take a hard look in the future. BritBOX and ITV have changed many things . I would hope you would really consider the fact that the cast and crew have to work. The U.K. does not have the same unions and guilds as we do in the US . In fairness the Jane Austen was started in 2019 and the last piece is March 2023. Something very wrong. Anita Pemstein
Will take whatever we can get of Sanditon, thank you!
I think that each one of us should do as we believe. Theo James as is Ben are young British actors. Theo had a greater presence in the original not only as an actor but as executive producer. The British actors and crews do not have the organizations or pay scale as the US . To me the saddest part is that Jane Austen was not the author . Enjoy. .
I think it’s for the best. I originally really wanted a season 2, but was pretty disappointed by it in real life. I couldn’t even finish it.
I think this one would have been better as a one season limited series with an unexpectedly sad ending.
I felt season 1 ended the way it did because the plans were there to make season 2. When it got cancelled I think it shocked everyone not least the writers and crew involved in the making of Sanditon. However, I have to say I really enjoyed the more complex relationship between Charlotte and Colbourn in season 2
and still hope they end up together.
I look forward to this series. Season one left me angry with the writers and PBS. Season two compensated those feelings with new characters and new possibilities. The writers have almost too many avenues to pursue, we wait with baited breath.
Fortunately, Season 2 brilliantly resolved the problems of Season 1 (ITV justifiably canceled before S1 had finished airing). Only S1 Episode 1 was based (loosely) on Austen’s unfinished 11-chapter manuscript. Regardless of whether “Austenesque” or not, S2 was genius. I did not miss any Season 1 characters who thankfully did not show up again in S2. My only criticism of Season 2 is that too much valuable time was wasted dwelling on the demise of Sidney Parker who was never portrayed as an Austen Hero.
I agree! Sidney Parker was more like Willoughby in Sense and Sensibility. Colborn has a Darcy-esque quality to him. I can’t wait for a longer trailer and the final season to be released.
Upfront funding was only provided for Season 2 and 3 (12 episodes) in order to bring a conclusion to Charlotte Heywood’s story. Rose Williams has already stated that she would not be able to continue in the role, even if Sanditon was renewed for a Season 4. Therefore, the writers would have to find a new angle if they were to continue Sanditon (similar to Bridgerton when The Duke left after Season 1).
I wanted to a fourth season so Sidney would come back.
I hate that this series is canceled – it is one of the best on PBS – please reconsider!!!
Agreed! I want season 4. Please!
Loved every moment and every character of Sandition, I will miss them all terribly.
Season 3 ends in the very best way if you’re a true romantic. Looking forward to the next great thing from Masterpiece!!
