Though Showtime “flirted with the idea” of expanding The Man Who Fell to Earth into additional seasons, the network has “ultimately decided to embrace it as a one season story well told.”
“Our thanks to the extraordinary Alex Kurtzman, Jenny Lumet, John Hlavin and Sarah Timberman who did a great job of turning the David Bowie film into such a resonant tale for our times,” a Showtime spokesperson tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And kudos to a wondrous cast led by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Naomie Harris and Bill Nighy for bringing it to life. Alex and Jenny originally intended The Man Who Fell To Earth to be a close-ended story. While we flirted with the idea of expanding it into a second season, we all ultimately decided to embrace it as a one season story well told.”
Inspired by both the 1963 Walter Tevis novel and the iconic 1976 Bowie film, The Man Who Fell to Earth starred Academy Award nominees Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) and Naomie Harris (Moonlight) as the titular alien, named Faraday, and Justin Falls, a brilliant scientist and engineer.
The Man Who Fell to Earth was executive-produced by co-showrunners Kurtzman and Lumet (Star Trek: Discovery), Hlavin (TV’s Shooter), Timberman, Carl Beverly, Heather Kadin, Aaron Baiers, Ejiofor, Rola Bauer and Françoise Guyonnet. Its final episode aired July 3.
TVLine’s Cable TV Scorecard has been updated to reflect The Man Who Fell to Earth‘s fate. Were you hoping for a second season? Drop a comment with your thoughts below.
I thoroughly enjoyed the series and hoped it could continue. Such a wonderful cast.
Same here. It was just well done.
Really sad this isn’t coming back I was looking forward to s
eeing 2nd season
This news truly saddens me because it is(was) so well written, acted and the special effects were perfect. I had a feeling however, that the way it ended allowed fo it to continue or stop there…hoping that Faraday does make it both ways. So few really good Sci Fys made anymore (for television) and way more exist past the first season.
“Well done” shows won’t last on either streamers or premium cable. If a show isn’t a big hit, or awards bait, it won’t last. This was good, but not either a watercooler hit, nor awards bait.
I loved The Man Who Fell to Earth. It was exciting and well done. If there was a second season I would have watched but I enjoyed the only season very much. Thanks for that.
I’m actually in favor of this. It is an outstanding miniseries, with just about everything tied up.
No, no, NO. This was a headline upon being read that felt like a gut-punch. The 10 Episodes I watched with edge-of-my-seat anticipation awaiting for another Sunday night to rotate around was the first TV I have watched in a long, long time (plus considering being physically disabled and practically home 24/7 I watch A LOT of TV via DVR) which had me feel that way. In a GREAT way! The script writing, the ensemble cast, the acting, et al. just absolutely congealed together into a fantastic program. Especially the portrayals by Chiwetel Ejiofor, Naomie Harris and Jimmi Simpson as the mysterious past and most awkward CIA Agent ever to be characterized that at times made you want to reach through your television set & strangle him yourself. It will be missed. Also missed as they were running together on rival premium cable networks that, too, was axed over on HBO with The Time Travelers Wife.
Well, that’s rather disappointing.
I sure was hoping The Man who fell to Earth would continue. It was my #1
I have a question cause I saw neither this show or the david bowie movie, does the alien have superpowers in this or not and are there other alien species?
Chiwetel Ejiofor is wonderful, I’m hoping to enjoy a lot more of his work, and I’m happy that this series seems to have demonstrated his great range.
The series was spectacular until it started spending so much time with gun-fights, I couldn’t stand it from that point and beyond.
This is sad news although not unexpected. I truly loved the 1st season. Have already watched it twice. I would have loved for it to continue. I loved Naomi Harris and Chiwetel together in this, they were amazing. I really hoped it would come back, but deep down always knew it was a one seasoner.
This is sooo disappointing!
It’s such an incredible show, well written, beautifully directed, and the cast was next level good!!!
I was really looking forward to season 2.
Not happy about this development…or lack of development, as the case may be.
I didn’t watch this show, but I wanted to say that there’s something to be said for ending a show on a good note. Too many times shows go on and it’s painful to watch them go downhill.
In this day and age of running things into the ground, it’s nice to see that they decided one great season is the way to go.
Cancelling of “The Man Who Fell To Earth”, is an extreme disappointment to fans, who were waiting for future seasons. The themes of extra terrestrial intelligence providing an energy source that is “clean”, water being “ultra precious “, connectivity between nature, humanity and other life forms were/are teaching tools we all should take heed to , as we begin to understand our “place in the universe”
I greatly enjoyed the first season and while I would’ve enjoyed more, I am very satisfied with we we got. I did worry that a second season mightnot have had the magic and mystery of the first. While bittersweet, I’m in a good place with this news.
Showtime is collapsing and will soon be part of Paramount+
Time to trim the fat.
That’s messed up!
this was such a smart and topical reimagining of the story, really bummed it didn’t get renewed!
I am so disappointed to hear this, this was by far one of the best shows I have watched in a very long time. The execution was absolutely stunning; from the character choices to the acting itself. I pray they decide to revisit their decision at a later date.
This is why I pirate. I will never pay for a streaming service like Showtime when they continually cancel shows that where just starting to get interesting.
“This is why I pirate. I will never pay for a streaming service like Showtime when they continually cancel shows that where [sic] just starting to get interesting.”
I call total and complete BS, James.
I bet you’ve watched every single season of *GOT, Sopranos, Entourage, Dexter, and maybe Billions, Succession. Hell, maybe even Sex and the City and the reboot!
You even most likely watched every season of Homeland, Boardwalk Empire, and are now prepared to watch multiple seasons of HOD, all via piracy.
Unfortunately, ALL networks, from basic to premium cable, to pricey streamers, behave this way.
Hell, brah, do wtf you want, but spare us your outrage and hypocritical “principles.”
You have none, so stop pretending you’re Robin Hood.
*I used GOT and HBO as examples, bc IIRC, GOT went multiple seasons and was the highest watched series of all time, across all platforms.
Also HBO, like Showtime, created multiple award winning shows, season after season.
I’d bet you pirated those too, “cuz reasons.”
A phenomenal series like nothing else on television. It’s extremely disheartening to find out they won’t continue this story.
How very sad. People like myself love science fiction . You guys should have had a season 2.
I really loved the first season, I really was looking forward to a season 2. This was such a great series ended to fast. What great actors that pull off such a great entertaining mind captivating series.
The Man Who Fell To Earth is a GREAT SHOW!! It’s. Sad to hear that it will be canceled before we have a chance to understand the story
