NBC is adding another medical show to its roster.
The broadcast network has greenlit Dr. Wolf, a drama inspired by the life and work of Oliver Sacks with Zachary Quinto set to star as the famed neurologist.
Dr. Wolf was NBC’s last remaining pilot that was still in contention and joins the previously ordered mockumentary St. Denis Medical with a slot on the network’s schedule. NBC only picked up four pilots last season and greenlit one comedy and one drama, with Amber Ruffin multicam Non-Evil Twin and Retta drama Murder by the Book both having been passed over earlier this year.

It’s unclear when exactly Dr. Wolf will air given the ongoing performers strike. The longer the actors remain on strike, the less likely it will be for broadcast networks to air any scripted originals that haven’t already been filmed.
Dr. Wolf is inspired by Sacks’ books The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat and An Anthropologist on Mars and revolves around the larger-than-life neurologist Oliver Wolf and his team of interns as they explore the last great frontier — the human mind — while also grappling with their own relationships and mental health. Tamberla Perry, Ashleigh LaThrop, Alexander MacNicoll, Aury Krebs, Spence Moore II and Teddy Sears round out the cast.
Michael Grassi (Riverdale) penned the script and exec produces the series alongside Greg Berlanti and his Berlanti Productions partner Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman as well as Fabel’s Henrik Bastin and Melissa Aouate, The Imaginarium’s Andy Serkis, Jonathan Cavendish and Will Tennant and DeMane Davis. The project, which was ordered to pilot in January, had been in the works since early 2018 when Serkis teamed with Fabrik to develop the pair of books by the “poet laureate of contemporary medicine,” as Sacks was dubbed by the New York Times. Lee Toland Krieger directed the pilot.
The series is a co-production between Warner Bros. Television, where Berlanti is based with a rich overall deal, and Universal Television.
Dr. Wolf joins a roster of Berlanti-produced shows that include The CW’s Superman & Lois, All American and All American: Homecoming, Netflix’s You, NBC rookie drama Found and Max’s The Girls on the Bus.
Dr. Wolf marks a homecoming for Quinto at NBC after he broke out on the network’s Heroes. His credits include AMC’s NOS4A2, American Horror Story and the Star Trek features.
