Candice Bergen is returning to primetime.
The Murphy Brown alum has been tapped to star in the ABC comedy pilot Pearl, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
From Friends grad Andrew Reich, Pearl centers on a larger-than-life family matriarch, Pearl (Bergen), who finds out she has cancer and becomes intent on controlling and orchestrating every aspect of her family’s life before she dies.
Reich will pen the script and executive produce the single-camera comedy from ABC Studios. Jim Field Smith will direct the pilot.
For Bergen, the role marks her return as a primetime series regular following gigs on ABC’s Boston Legal from 2005-08 and CBS’ Murphy Brown, which ended its 10-year run in 1998. She is repped by ICM Partners.
