Chris McCarthy’s rise at Viacom continues.
McCarthy has been promoted to president of VH1 and Logo.
The news comes as McCarthy has been serving as GM of VH1 since August and at Logo since 2014.
“Within a remarkably short time, Chris has driven record growth across all screens and done an incredible job of reinventing the VH1 brand, bringing the focus back to its rich pop culture heritage,” Viacom president Doug Herzog said in a release announcing the news Wednesday. “Chris is a smart and strategic leader who thinks from an ‘audience first’ perspective, leading to highly impressive results.”
During his time at VH1, McCarthy has overseen four straight quarters of growth and has made the cabler among the top 25 fastest growing entertainment networks. Currently, VH1 is up 48 percent quarter-to-date.
Under McCarthy, VH1 landed America’s Next Top Model, upcoming talker The Amber Rose Show and ordered 1990s hip-hop drama The Breaks. He’s also championed the return of the Big In franchise, with last year’s ranking as VH1’s most-watched tentpole event in nearly a decade. More recently, he revived Hip Hop Honors.
At Logo, McCarthy helped the LGBT-themed cabler achieve 10 straight quarters of year-over-year ratings growth, launch its Emmy-winning documentary division and more.
McCarthy’s Viacom tenure has included roles as exec vp at MTV, where he oversaw strategy, planning and tentpole events; he started his time at the company with a marketing gig at MTVU before being promoted to GM at the college network and MTV2.
